Considering this drug, the SSRIs all seem to have horrible start up effects. I am on Prozac now with the benzodiazepines and not having any success. Thoughts on BUSPAR?

Called my MD and requested a prescript
ion for something else, Prozac is NOT HELPING after 8-9 weeks but making things worse. Mood is TOO ELEVATED and making my hyper and jumpy jittery.
Informed him I will be stopping the prozac and requested a long term anti anxiety such as a Buspar type drug. Don't know if there is anything else out there.
Will be taking the xanax only, but I only take that when it's really bad to the panic attack point. Yesterday I had one that was so bad and chewed the xanax up to get a quicker treatment. That got it in my system quick and helped within 15 minutes or less when usually it's longer.
So will try Buspar if the MD gives it to me and xanax only when panic attacks hit.
No more of the SSRIs, the side effects of them at start up are horrible. They work well when I am in a depressive state but when anxiety predominates they end up being worse.
Wish there was a med that effectively treated both anxiety and depression, I know the SSRIs are touted for that but they seem to worsen things (anxiety-wise) for me.

I am sure that you are feeling really frustrated right now.:(
I hope that you and your doctor can come up with a good solution for you, med wise. You did give it a good try for 8-9 weeks...so you now know that it isn't right for you. Make sure and wean gradually...
I have heard that a lot of people have had good experience with Buspar...see what your doc says.
Let us know what you find out and how you are doing soon. Keep working on your coping mechanisms for any more panic episodes. We feel for you, and are here for your support.

Yankee,
I have been on 10mg Buspar 3x day for 4 mos. It works very well
to decrease the multiple panic attacks I was getting through out the day.
They were mid level, chest pain, hard to breathe etc... I use mindfulness and breathing to control the real bad one that sneak through, maybe once every 2-3 weeks. I think the drug is fab! No side effects!

My MD called in a prescript
ion for the 5 MG 3X day Buspar. Told me to wean off the prozac and that I can take Xanax with the Buspar if necessary.
So I am going to reduce prozac to every other day for a week and start the buspar and take the xanax only when anxiety is out of control.
Not sure how long to expect results from buspar, I am hearing weeks, but not as long as the prozac.
My diagnosis is usually centered around GAD and Buspar is supposed to be perfect for that. I do get panic attacks but those are usually the result of the GAD.
Genetics at play too, pretty sure my mother has the same issues. Used to make me anxious at night when she would worry, check the locks over and over, call the police if a twig broke, etc. High anxiety to say the least.

I am on Buspar, 15 mg 2x a day. It has helped calm down the anxiety attacks. It took about
2 weeks for it to kick in for me.
I still think it could go higher yet and I will talk to my psychiatrist on Wednesday about
this very topic.
It has helped me. May you find peace.

A good friend of mine takes it daily and it has helped her immensely. She no longer needs medicine for GERD, which she has had for15 years.

The 5MG 3X a day seems like a low dose. My MD seems to favor giving the lowest possible dose, hence the .25 MG of Xanax as needed which is the lowest possible and now the 5MG 3X Day which seems to be the lowest dose also.
I'm not a big bruiser so maybe that's why, if I crack 170 it's because I'm wolfing down tacos.

Has to be a placebo effect, but feeling VERY good this AM, more relaxed than I have for a long time. Did not take the prozac or xanax, only the buspar.
I don't think it can work that fast??

So far so good with the prozac stop and the adding of buspar. No withdrawal at all from the prozac. Taking less and less Xanax, but when I do with the buspar it is heavier.

Glad the Buspar is helping you and that you are weaning off the prozac ok.

I was on Buspar for anxiety and found it to have few side effects. I was taking 10 mg, 3x/day. It did not work real well for me. However, I gave up on it too soon. I could have easily increased the dose to 60, which is what some studies suggest is needed for anxiety.
I'd give it a fair try...it took 2 weeks for it to kickin for me, but everyone is different.

Buspar seems to be working good. Came home today and took my second dose of the day with a bid light. Must be working because normally I would not do that and I would worry and be concerned or do it and then worry until I get anxious.
So now I say screw it, take the med with a brew but just dont do it all the time or even frequently. Limit the brews to two max a day and not necessarily every day.
Going with the flow.

I take Buspar and have been on it for a few months now. The biggest side effects that I have (and keep in mind that I am really sensitive the medications) is sleepiness and sometimes waking up in the a.m. with a headache. Compared to the problems that I had with SSRI's, it's a piece of cake. I hope that it works well for you.

Feeling elevated this AM, a little jumpy and so forth but milder than the prozac issues I was having or the other SSRIs. I am still weaning off the prozac so that may still be having an effect.
Took a .25mg Xanax in between my AM and afternoon 5MG Buspar and that worked well. That's my first Benzo in awhile (since Tuesday and this is Sunday so not bad).
I am only on my second week of the Buspar and hoping for a little more improvement, started it August 24th. So far no side effects to note. No panic attacks except for a few elevated times, this AM particularly after a long walk I felt a little panicky.
I'm back to work Tuesday and still adjusting to a surprise adoptive placement, but all is well considering all the drama. Will be nice to settle back into a routine and I'm actually anxious to get back to work and see what the new routine will be like with a family addition.

How did Buspar end up working out for you? Are you still taking it? Hope you are well and have found some peace in the past 2 yrs!
Blessings, Lisa
