always getting the sensation of a lump in my throat

Does anyone else get this feeling, particularily after I eat. My doctor thinks I'm having acid reflux which would explain the burning sensation in my chest. I'm trying not to panic with this lump in my throat sensation. I just took my daily second dose of ativan so I can sleep but now my stomach hurts a bit & the throat thing. Is this my mind playing tricks because my doctor just mentioned this today & gave me a prescription for something called Tecta that I'm supposed to take every morning?? I keep feeling like I have this massive belch ready to release but it doesn't. When it eventually does it's this tiny little burp. Does anxiety bring on acid reflux??

I am sorry to hear of this issue that is bothering you.

The lump in the throat sensation was actually the first anxiety symptom that I ever had, and one that I know well...as it stuck around for awhile.

I do believe that this can happen with or without reflux...so it very well could be that you are dealing with a little bit of both, as far as the cause of your problem goes.

Getting the anxiety and the GERD under control should bring relief. This is good then that your doctor prescribed the PPI med to bring stomach acid levels down.

You can also continue the coping mechanisms that help you to relax and de-stress to manage the anxiety part of it.;)

One thing that I found helpful to target this problem specifically was to focus on relaxing the muscles in the front of my neck. I would let my head fall back while letting my mouth fall open and just completely relax for several times a day. (not pretty, but it works, Lol!)

I hope that you find the relief from this that you need soon! Keep us updated.

gerd or anxiety. If it is gerd otc priolsec or nexium will help.

If your Dr. feels you have acid reflux ask for a referral to a GI physician who could run some tests and help determine if indeed you do have GERD.

i could not have described my symptoms better than you did. in my case i have had the hiatal hernia w/reflux over 40 years and am controlled presently with prilosec. but i still have your symptoms exactly. in my case i was referred by an ent for a barium swallow test. the swallow test showed a delay in my esophagus. instead of dropping straight down as expected, the stuff i swallow hangs in the esophagus longer than it should. the ent said it wasn't a blockage, but more of a muscle delay. i am waiting for a gastro appointment to find out what all of this means to me and how we proceed. i do take anxiety medication so this is in all likelyhood not an anxiety issue. your problem may not be anxiety related.

Thanks stkitt. I've been reading all over the net about this globus sensation & I truly believe that's what it is. I actually already feel better just knowing there is a term for it. It exactly describes my symptoms. I have yet to take any of the reflux medication & haven;t had the burning sensation in my chest for 3-4 days, just the lump in my throat. I'm starting to wonder if my decrease in ativan is helping th burning sensation go away? I'm certainly having some withdrawal symptoms from that but I honestly feel better than I have in awhile. I am still taking paxil buthave not made the increase to twice daily doses of 12.5mg nd I'm still taking just 10mg a day. I don;t think I need to increase my dosage (just yet anyway).

i have had this a few times and the more you think about it, the longer it usually lasts. i finally went to the ENT the last time and he scoped my throat for any obstructions. that wasn't the best procedure for anxiety. they numbed my throat while i was awake and it lasted well over an hour. eek. kinda weird but managable. when it showed nothing, it went away a few days later and haven't had it since. i get dry mouth but i changed toothpastes and it helped.

my doctor tried to say mine was GERD too but i really never get heartburn and i went to a gastro doctor who didn't think i had it but said the only test that was accurate was a endoscopy which i don't want to have done since my symptoms aren't more than mild at best.

anyway, hang in there and try some meds for acid reflux if you think that may be it. try to occupy your mind on other things and before you know it, it will be gone. hugs.
