Hello,
I haven't checked in in awhile and I'm not going to go through a full disclosure of how I've been and what I've been up to (I'm short on time), but I just had a general question. What do you think of Dejavu? I have had it several times in my life and it sometimes precedes bad events and sometimes good events. I've heard several explanations of what Dejavu means and why it occurs, so I don't necessarily need that information. I would just like to know what you think of it (even if you don't believe it exist).

Hi Rxclusion. I have had dejavu so many times in my life it's not even funny, and it feels so real, that for the longest time it caused me sever panic attacks because i was afraid it was warning me that something bad was about to happen. I was seeing a neurologist for other reasons, and as he was a pretty cool dr i asked him what he thought of it..and as he explained it to me... Dejavu is sort of like a mini seizure. One side of your brain slows down while the other keeps going. So the side that speeds up registers the scenerio or situation fractions of a second before the other side of the brain, making it seem like you've seen/heard/been there before. It isn't dangerous and it's not part of a medical condition he assured me as i have health ocd. It just sometimes happens as the brain is a technical part of the body. This made me feel more at ease when it happened there after. That is my experience with Dejavu and the medical answer i got. Im sure other people have all sorts of explanations that will come along and post hopefully. But your definately not alone.

I had never heard of the reasons behind this phenomenon...but that makes perfect sense!

It is funny how something that has such a 'mystical' reputation actually has a perfectly explanable neurological cause.

It is funny that somewhere, sometime back before it could be explained by modern medicine...someone came up with the superstitions that were born of this feeling!

I have always just chalked it up to one of those 'wierd things' that just happens occasionally.

It has never frightened me...probably because it has happened to me since childhood.

Makes you wonder what else we will discover medically, which before could never be understood!

That is certainly an interesting and informative medical point of view of Dejavu. It could be my brain playing tricks on me but sometimes when I have Dejavu it seems like it is something I have dreamed before and sometimes when I think about (during the Dejavu) the situation memories that are not real come up in my head that precede what is going on. Basically like a premonition type of Dejavu. I personally think it has to do also with anxiety, being heightened with our awareness it could likely be one side of our brain catching up to notations the other side has already made. It could also be an instinctual and primitive function that precedes the cognitive "anxiety". Or it could be that we get temporary glimpses of a parallel universe :) (I like to be optimistic and fantastical and believe it could be that one).
I appreciate the information and again reiterate it was quite informative from a medicinal standpoint. I am not sure I am comfortable with a "slight" or "mini" seizure because the health anxiety in me wonders if that is a predecessor of a grand mal, mild, or TI seizure.
But I am sure all is well, I realize I did not receive much restful sleep last night and that could be the cause of my brain acting a little bit slow. Sort of like when your computer has been on for awhile, or is hot, it performs slower than normal.

Rx, One of my closests friends in VN was in the Naval Hospital with me and several others, Ron was in
pretty bad shape and had to stay in traction for over 6 months, he was in constant pain 24hrs a day,
I asked him one day why he didn't ask for something for the pain.
He looked at me with tears in his eyes and said, Larry, the pain reminds me that I am still alive.
My point is no one is perfect, we all have defects of one kind or another, this does not make us sick but it
does make us human. So what is my point, I have been reading a book written by a hospital director in 1930's today I came across a chapter that stunned me, it was totally about health anxieties and the statements of the patients could have been written by any one of us. "What we are dealing with is not new, and thousands of people have conquered this and moved on to live good happy lives".
I do not ridicule, I only long to give Hope!

Well, dejavu is actually very common and completely natural. It is your brain trying to price together a somewhat familiar place or experience with another that lies within your subconscious part of your brain. It is complicates yes but simple to understand. Its pretty much the same thing as seeing the face of someone you remember but can't remember their name, same concept.

I'm sorry Larry but I did have a little chuckle when I read your post. I was like umm okay where did that come from and then I saw the second one about you losing your mind and I had to laugh. I have done this so many times that people just smile and nod at me now. I spout off things that had nothing to do with what they were talking about but they love me anyway hehe. I veered off the main subject of this post but I had to respond. You always have lovely uplifting posts and I enjoy reading them.

As far as deja vu, yep I have had it many times. I have had dreams and then a few days to weeks later, the exact scenario would be going on and I would think hey wait a minute, I had a dream about this. Our brains are such wonderful things.

Im sorry i shouldn't have said "mini seizure" because no it's not something that will lead to further seizures. That's just what the Dr. said to try to make me understand. I think of it more like "brain lag" :) Im sorry i too have really bad health anxiety, health ocd, hypochondria/cyberchondria.

Larry don't you dare apologize! You have given me wholesome advice quite often so don't feel bad because you said something off topic, I still took a lesson from that regardless.
I find Dejavu quite strange and I think it is something that has come from me being a little more stressed than usual. I wonder if it will still be relevant whenever I am back home.

You know i thought about this alot today, and trying to find a common denomenator in my most memerable dejavu experiences. I have ocd..i think i mentioned it, so i can't help it. And i usually seem to get it when my brain is "clouded". I have some chronic pain issues, so if i've taken new pain meds and when i haven't slept in a long time is when it sticks out the most that i get dejavu. I know this post doesn't answer any questions but anyway. Good topic Rx, thanks for posting, it's been food for thought for me :)
