hi my screen name is display.

i have a big problem coming up in my life. i have shared about this before on this site, unfortunately the scary thoughts and anxiety keep coming up, which is why i am here again.

i will be getting a full upper denture held in place by implants. my periodontist says the healing stage is not that hard. my problem is i am a smoker and know i will have to quit for the surgery but don't seem to be making any progress towards that. i am a member of a 12-step group to help with that but am not making any real progress.

Hi Display,

I don't know anything that will help you quit smoking, but I just wanted to let you know I am here and read your post and care. I'm sure like the rest of us, you've been through a lot of challenges in your life, and you've gotten through every one -- I know you'll get through this, too.

Hi Display,

I have been smoke free for about 2 months now and it was the hardest thing to do, especially since I had tried probably 50 times to be a non-smoker. You do have to really want to quit to be successful. Remind yourself constantly of all the awesome things that will happen when you stop. You will feel healthier, look healthier, and save money. I found one of the most helpful things to get me through the day is to not think of it as "quitting smoking". "Quitting" has a negative connotation. Think that you are "outgrowing it". Everyone evolves and changes and that is just another part of your life that you are outgrowing and changing. I hope it gets easier for you! Just stay positive and keep yourself busy.

Those implants are extremely hard to heal. I am still thinking about getting the implants. So far in my mind its about 90 to 10 that I wont. If I was still a smoker I would never ever even think of getting the implant as its nearly 80% sure you will have an infection. I have 3 friends with implants. 2 are smokers. They both took twice as long to heal as the non smoker. The non smoker said if he had his choice now he would not have gotten the implants. They stay tender and you still have to take care with what you eat. I guess I have given you just the hard facts of what I know. I am sorry. If I knew anyone that loved them I would tell you...........As far as stopping smoking, I quit cold turkey 2 years ago in March. Im so glad I did. The only time I want one is when I have an argument with my hubby. Then I want me a brandy and a smoke. Just talking about it sounds so dang good. I loved smoking. I do know it made me feel bad tho. I have enough ailments without making more. I wish you luck, both with your smoking and your implants. One thing for sure, if you get the implants, you for sure gotta quit smoking...............best regards. Cathy
