I rode my horse yesterday evening, it was fun. It used to be my main source of exercise. ...then I started having some new aches and pains, probably age related, and had to stop riding. I think horse riding is good therapy for me. It has been hard finding an activity to replace it. I just wanted to say that for me, outdoor fun is a big part of healing my depression and anxiety. I used to have a 4 wheeler and that was great fun, but I sold it. I noticed I felt a shift in my thoughts and attitude after riding, not huge, but an improvement.

Tap into your pioneer woman spirit!!!
Those ladies were riding well into their golden years.
Great job on getting back into doing what makes you feel good...at least menatally;p I bet if you ride a little everyday, that you will get accustomed to the soreness, and it will eventually go away.
I bet your horse was really psyched to have you ride as well!!! What is his/her name? Breed/color?
I have only ridden a handful of times...but I think horses are beautiful creatures.:)
Enjoy!

Horses are great therapy for everyone no matter what the condition. Last year I volunteered at a Therapeutic Stable for the disabled and you would be amazed how relaxed these teens were when riding the horses. It was so calming for them. They would be so wired when they came and when they got on the horse they calmed down within seconds. It's amazing what animals can do therapy in positive ways.

SC, my horse is a chestnut color, with copper penny red, and 4 white socks. She's sweet and sturdy, built like a tank, white nose pink ...registered....with big Brown eyes and eats 4 ton of hay a year....and oats. she's a Quarterhorse, but has a calcium deposit on her left front fetlock area tendon, from a fall. She gets lame sometimes from it and I have to give her Bute (pain pill) and not ride a few days..weeks..til it heals. she's very good natured. I'd like to think I could go slow and build up, I do try...but when my knees get numbness I know I've gone too far with my spondy and I have to back off. I wonder sometimes if my anxiety (which has been worse since my horse went lame) would be more manageable without my limitations physically. Sigh.
Nurselisa, yes, horses are very therapeutic. She calms me and makes all my troubles go away. Some studies have been done on that phenomenon and there's something to it. There's an energy she imparts to me somehow, being on this 1200 pound animal and hearing the gentle hoofbeats, the quiet, her strength. Somehow there's a bonding between horse and rider and you take on her strength.there's a lot to be said for a truly good horse.
Larry I love that pony...but I need a new body, mines wearing out. I've got spondylolithesis (slipped vertabre, stage 1, mild but bothersome at times) arthritus on my sacroiliac sacroiliac joints, but I keep going. I till my garden, I keep as active as I can but I know I'm slowing down some! And I hate it!!

My horses name is Classy! She loves being ridden!! She has rubbed her mane off near her ears ..tearing her hair out...without that activity. But it's hard for me...a little at a time is right, especially if I can get the saddle on her without those comical goats sticking their horns in the stirrups and chewing on the lead rope and causing numerous problems..

She sounds beautiful! Thanks for sharing more about
her.:)
Try not to focus on the limitations that are there...we over think as humans, and often miss out on the experiences around us.
Think like a horse...have the
best
time when you are out and actively enjoy your riding. When things start to get uncomfortable, simply say...time to rest. Then go and enjoy being at rest!

You're right SC, you know I've been thinking about
that. I need to do things and not let my limitations stop me. My Dr said the same thing, enjoy things and if the arthritus on m th back flares back off a little.

She sounds beautiful!
I've never been able to ride - I'm too scared. haha! Tried three times and gave up (that's the spirit, right?). Earned myself one concussion, though. lol
Even without riding, though, horses do impart a lot of peace. One of my close friends lived on a horse ranch growing up (my family raised cattle, no horses). She had this beautiful horse named "Star Lady." I liked to go and brush Star Lady and just talk to her or lead her around. Sometimes, I'd stand with my face against her face and just breathe. My friend said I was the only person that horse liked who didn't ride. :)
Maybe on the days you can't ride, you can still take comfort in communing with your friend. But, like others, I think you should take advantage of any opportunity you get and enjoy it to the fullest. :)

Sometimes I wish I didnt have an opinion, my Mothers lower back got to bothering her and she quit walking I told her one
day hoping it would scare her into moving around more that if she didnt keep up her exercise she would get to where she
couldnt do anything. The last few years she was in a wheel chair and had to be tied in, every time she tried to stand up she
fell. The saddest thing about
her is that she was a gymnast when she was in her 60's she could walk on her hands for a
long way maybe 50 feet. I miss her! Peace

Berock I agree, the horses impart strength just by being brushed and around them. They are great animals. I hope your concussion. Wasn't too bad. I had a concussion3 years ago..got bucked off by another horse I had....I sold her.
Larry....I miss my mom too...our mom's knew how to make everything alright.

Mine wasn't the horse's fault. It was Star Lady, in fact. She was my friend's barrel racing horse. We were trotting along and Star Lady started veering out towards the practice barrels. In my ignorance, I squeezed my legs against her real tight - I didn't know that meant, "GO!" haha
The concussion wasn't bad, and I woke up to their cutest farm hand wiping my face with a wet handkerchief - it was just like a harlequin romance! hahaha!
