So I called my physicians assistants office today to tell her I've been having a slight increase in anxiety since increasing my dose ... Asked if she could give me something short term .... She prescribes me buspar ............ I'm so upset. I wanted something as needed not a cocktail.

Buspar can work very well for some people.  It is not a benzo  and I suspect your physician's assistant doesn't have a blank RX to write an order for benzos.

I would have to look back to see what your new med is?  My Psy Dr. is very strict about writing RX for benzos. 

I do use Buspar as part of my cocktail but others use it as a stand alone medication.

I know you don't want to take more medications than needed, but you know that your regular medicine has worked in the past for overall anxiety. You just gotta wait for that increase to kick in.

Buspar is a pretty helpful as needed medicine. My husband does SO well with it. He can take it as needed and not take it when he doesn't need it, but let his other meds stay level.

I take celexa and buspar. The Celexa helps with the overall anxiety, so it interrupts life less. I can use the buspar as needed... it really does work well.

I'm sorry that you're so upset, but hope you find peace or something that works for you soon! Hugs!

Thanks for responding guys. I'm just so sick of this. Shouldnt the medication increase be kicking in after 2 weeks ... I know I'm the most impatient person. I'm going to try and wait it out before i add anything to the mix. I should just went straight to the 150mg instead of doing 112.5. Ughhhh

You're not the most impatient person, I promise!

I've been kicking and screaming through this mess! I wanted to be well after the first week of medicine. When I wasn't I added therapy and expected to be well after the first session. haha!

In general, new medicines or increases in medicine can take up to 6 weeks to reach therapeutic level. It's not uncommon for anxiety to actually temporarily increase during that period.

The buspar, however, should act within minutes to help some of the physical symptoms. Have you tried it, yet?

I respectfully disagree that the buspar will act within minutes...benzodiazepines take at least half an hour to cross the blood brain barriour..and Buspar takes two to four weeks to 'Kick in'
So it has properties of an anti depressant taking a while to kick in..but it is used for generalized anxiety disorder...there is some research about using it with melantonin makes this combo work as an antidepressant just type in Buspar and Melantonin on your computer or phone or whatever

Half an hour is minutes in my interpretation. ;)

Perhaps it's placebo effect, but I experience pretty quick relief from taking it during intense panic attacks. (In addition to my Celexa, which I maintain daily.)

Sounds like you've got pretty technically correct information, though. I didn't look it up, but was speaking from personal experience.

Since my symptoms are caused by my mind, it's likely that the relief I experience could be, too.
