Chris,
This is EXACTLY how my panic disorder started! I did the same thing. Every pain, twinge, or weird sensation was automatically the scariest and most bizarre "diagnosis" I could imagine. I've heard: "If you hear hoof beats, imagine horses not zebras." But that didn't matter to me.
I would get sick in school studying biology, anatomy and physiology....daily! I was convinced. When I had leg pains walking up hills I remember that being a sign of leukemia. (Skipped over me not being in shape or that at the time I was still growing).
For what it's worth, I went into a career in medicine, where I've been happy for decades.
Also, for what it's worth, there's a "condition" called "intern syndrome" where as interns make rounds they become convinced they're coming down with every disease being observed and studied. It covers all ages, no discrimination.
The farthest thing from my mind is that I could ever, ever actually make a living in the medical field being surrounded by all sorts of diseases, traumas, reactions,...but I did. And I love it! I turned those experiences I had going through all this symptomatic anxiety, and flipped around to help me be WAY more empathetic to our patients than those who only have book smarts. As a result, I often can make more headway with patients.
Hang in there dear, you are in such a large group of people who have the same thing, you couldn't count them all!
Welcome to the club, and imagine the possibilities!
