I know it's frustrating to hear, but it really does sound like staying away from benzos would be in your best interest.
Also, I'm not sure how you approached your doctor, but there are a lot of things that will influence what they prescribe, how much, etc.
I know that when you have an idea of what you think will help, it's hard to let go and trust your doctor to make the decision. The truth is, though, they're much more knowledgeable than we are.
Xanax/Ativan are a BIG addiction risk. In fact, I was just prescribed Xanax Monday. I dedicated much of my two-hour session on Tuesday to discussing it (and my diagnosis) with my psychologist before I ever took a dose. I'm still nervous, but I've accepted that I need to give it a shot.
There are less addictive benzos, from my understanding.
Maybe you should ask your doctor what options there are besides SSRIs and drugs that can an addiction risk? There are many classes of antidepressant/anti-anxiety medications. Surely there is a good option for you.
But, like the others have said, while medicines help with symptoms, you have to take other steps to find healing... like therapy, coping mechanisms, etc.
Best of luck to you!
