I've been battling with HA/GAD since the end of March, like you I tried to get by without meds, but the whole situation was spiralling out of control. I was stopping at home more and more, then when I did go out to some place where there were a lot of people I was suffering increasingly worse panic attacks.
So since the beginning of November I've been taking Amitriptyline 10mg a night, last Friday my doctor upped the dose to 20mg with a view to upping it further to 25mg.
Since starting the med my sleep is improved and I feel calmer when it's in my system, once its worn off though (by lunchtime the following day) I can fell the anxiety start to build up again.
The only side effect I've noticed is that it slows up my digestive system some, not really constipation but almost!!

Hi SoiA,
Hopefully you will get some more responses from others...and I am glad to read that you know everyone reacts differently. Still it is good to do your research like you are doing.
Learn about the benefits/drawbacks to different classes of A/D meds and anti-anxiety Rx's. (SSRI vs. SNRI vs. beta blockers vs. as needed benzodiazepines, ect)
...also talking with your doctor to get his/her input would be a good move as well.
Remember your coping skills as well during this time. You will likely find that the combination of these with the medication will be a great combination for managing your anxiety.:)
