These Are a Few of My Favorite Things...

Let's make a list of our favorite things about the holidays, to keep our spirits up...even among the craziness of the Season.  This can include favorite traditions, songs, movies ect...whatever puts a smile on your face and has a holiday (Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year's) theme.

Most satisfying feeling:

finding just the right gifts, and getting them all wrapped, with a couple of days to spare!

Favorite Tradition:

staying up late with hubby on Christmas Eve to fill the kids stockings.

Most Peaceful Moment:

singing Silent Night at Christmas Eve service by candlelight

Biggest indulgance:

Christmas Eve dinner buffet at my folks house...so good, so overboard!

...but looking for the good points is a great step in surviving the holidays.:)

...they all sound wonderful. (I love the dog song too...it came on when we were decorating the tree last week, and I couldn't stop giggling!)

Oh I adore doing the Christmas cards too.

I don't buy boxed collections either. I pick every card out by hand, and I choose blank cards so that I can write my own messages inside. I often go for cards that are made from very good paper stock, with textural designs, many of them hand-made.

I've always had a "thing" for paper products! I could spend forever-and-a-day in stationery stores! I'm even fussy about what type of pens I'll write with.

It's enjoyable to me to craft what I put into them, putting deliberate thought into how I hand-write the envelopes and messages. I get such enjoyment out of that. I still pick out stickers, like snow-flakes, to put on the back of the envelope.

No two cards are ever the same. I enjoy the process.

I like the sound (smell!) of that simmering pot! The smells of Christmas are so unique, that sounds deliciously delightful. (I'd just have to caution Hubby so he doesn't think I'm making some type of tea and try to drink it!) It's nice coming home to a cheery-smelling house! Thanks for that idea!

Wrapping gifts with the anticipation of the recipient opening them.

It's a fairly new tradition, but all of us cousins exchange lottery tickets on Christmas Day at my aunt's house and we all sit there concentrating on scratching.

Most peaceful moment:

Hitting the pillow on Christmas Eve after exchanging gifts with my parents.

Biggest indulgence:

Gregg's Restaurant's Death by Chocolate cake

I love Christmas cinnamon/vanilla smells, and cards, and Christmas Vacation Movie, and Elvis and 'Oh Holy Night"...

...and could you send some of that Christmas pudding and brandy custard my way Ian? Make is a double my good man! Hee hee.:)

OK, calories aside,  I forgot to mention Christmas Trifle - an awesome finish to any meal over the holidays.  My DIL bought me a Trifle bowl and it is fun creating this beautiful desert.

Favorite Holiday Movie:
the Muppet's Christmas carol (i found a dvd copy a couple of years ago. Best buy ever:)

Favorite christmas Song:
silent night

Most satisfying feeling:
seeing someone getting something they really like but had no idea they were getting it

Favorite Tradition:
going to carols by candellight and having a picnic dinner. It was my favorite family thing to do.

Most Peaceful Moment:
the afternoon nap while i digest the large amount of turkey, ham and pudding I've just eaten.

Biggest indulgance:
indulging my crazy cat lady side and dressing up my cat for some christmas snaps.

Coming from Australia all things summer make me think of christmas. cicada song, the smell of sunscreen, stinking hot days, cricket test matches (for those who don't know they are cricket matches that go for 5 days. Yep 5 days of watching a bunch of guys stand around in a big field and occasionally hitting the ball to one another).

I have to say that I am cracking up about the 'Ugly Christmas Sweater' trend going on.

My daughter in sixth grade had this theme at her school today. I went to the Goodwill and found the perfect things to make the ultimate U.C.S.

First I picked out the obligatory red and white knitted snowflake sweater...

...but then I found a hand quilted/stuffed Rudolph head that was 'mounted' to a fabric made 'plaque'...so it looked like he was ready to hang on a cabin wall or something...

I pinned the Rudolph to the sweater, so it is protruding out of her chest/abdomen somewhat reminiscent of 'Aliens'!

Needless to say, she kind of shares my (sick) sense of humor, and she loved it. ;p I hope that I find an occasion to wear it as well...hee hee heee....

Hubby's work has the U.C.S. thing going too.

He works in the IT department of a company that makes medical devices,...so as I try to picture these geeky guys and gals (and I use the term with fond affection, after all, I'm married to one!), running around with sweaters that are 3-D and blinking with lights,....

Well,...priceless!
