Hi,
I was on Xanax for a number of years and at one point was up to 6mg a day, which is very high! Back then, it seems that it wasn't as "taboo" as it's becoming among some doctors now. I never did become addicted. I actually weaned myself off of it after I started realizing that I didn't need it so much. The AD I was on (Zoloft) was actually doing well enough taking care of my anxiety eventually, so that was a blessing. You are very fortunate that you have a doctor that is open-minded and helps you. Your dose is quite small overall and it is patients such as yourself that are extremely unlikely to ever get addicted!
I wish that the clinic i go to would let their docs and NPs prescribe it, but they made a blanket-rule of NO BENZOS for anyone! That is a very foolish rule. Like my last shrink that worked there admitted to me (he's since left...all the good ones eventually do!) that he considered it just as bad to deny benzos to everyone as it would be to prescribe them to everyone! He disagreed with their rules. I've seen some of the best docs leave b/c of being hand-tied like that, but us low-income folks have nowhere else here in town to go for mental services, so we're stuck. So anyway, don't you fret over taking that xanax! it sounds like your doctor has it well in-hand in your case and you are being very sensible about it! Take your xanax in peace and have some peace of mind now, okay? ;)
