I just returned home from a 3 week visit at my brother's new home in WA. I mowed his lawn, weeded his flowers, painted the house, tiled the bathroom, and helped build a patio. I had to sleep on the couch with the stupid dog, so I didn't get much sleep, and I had to shower at the gym every day because the bathroom was under construction. The whole time I was there I felt like I was annoying my sister-in-law, but I managed to keep my anxiety under control the whole time! A panic attack started on the way to the airport to fly home - after all the stressful things were over - and I have been in a state of panic all day. So dumb. I can handle the stressful things, it's just everyday stuff that gets me.

you done real well at your brothers place. i do something similar. when i am away from home and visiting mum etc and i stay the night, even on a tiny couch, that aint comfortable i sleep well. i am on the couch here at home because of the anxiety of my bedroom. long story. keep strong and using your coping skills. do you think the projects of the renovations kept you from feeling or being anxious? being busy and focusing? i am not saying you are not busy at home, you know what i am saying. keep well.

Oh my goodness, I felt anxious just reading all of that! That's jamming a whole lot of stuff into a teensy window of time. Think of it, what would you tell someone else who jammed all of that physical stuff (which is very aggressive btw) into 3 weeks along with the emotional stuff of not being able to sleep, showering at a gym, being in someone else's home, personal tensions...

I think you did great, and this IS stress induced. I can *feel* the stress coming through. Perhaps your body was looking for a way to finally pitch a bit of a fit for being put out so much when you helped so much?

Frankly, I do think you earned it. (This is when I have the best work outs actually....gotta get that stress out somewhere).

Deep breath....deep breath.....you're fine! Your reaction is..........(wait for it)..........normal!! :)

Sorry you have this going on. I can totally relate to getting the anxiety when the experience is over. You have been on overload trying to get through and now your body has a chance to realize it all. Do what you can to relax and do something you enjoy if you can to get your brain on something else. Hope it passes soon for you.

Wow, you did really well holding it together for 3 weeks - I only made it 3 days on vacation once and I had to have my daughter call my hubby back in MN who told me to have my daughter change my flight to that day - pay whatever it costs but if I thought I could fly home alone than  come home. I came home.

I felt so bad I buckled and I was with my daughter, granddaughters and my son who lives in Oregon.

No beating yourself up as you are now my hero for sticking it out so long.

We have an anxiety disorder and we expect so much of ourselves.

I'm not a fan of the backlash after holding it together so long. I washed every window in my house last night (which is one of my favorite, most calming activities - I know that's weird) and I feel much better now. Starting construction on my own bathroom tomorrow, after I set up my office in our new building at work. And my older brother is going to Scotland for a month, so I will be taking care of his yard and pets. I guess when I stop and think about it there is a lot more going on.

I had an appointment with my doctor this morning. I had a sweet panic attack in her office and it seemed more concerning to her than it was to me. It was like my body was panicking but my mind was calm and focused. This happens quite frequently, I thought it was 'normal' but my doctor didn't think so. She suggested that I try hypnosis? I have a session scheduled, but I'm not sure about it.

Did she comment on 'why' she recommended hypnosis?

I ask because,--from what I understand, it can be helpful to some people, but one of the primary requirements is that the patient identifies a specific problem and they, themselves, desire to overcome said problem.

Given you did not seem concerned about 'the problem' where-by she did, I'm just curious about her recommendation.

Did you ask her about it?

The problem is that I don't talk. I have selective mutism and have been working on this problem since I was 5. Therapy, medications, self-help, relaxation techniques... I've done it all. My doctor suggested hypnosis because it's something I haven't tried yet.

After thinking about it all night, I think her concern was that I have panic attacks so often that I have cognitively learned to not be concerned. I can't stop it from happening physically so I just mentally ignore it. Maybe that's not healthy?
