Cilly,
If you are referring to a benzodiazepine, then I tend to agree with your doctor. These are best taken on an as needed basis, as they can result in tolerance and dependency issues.
However, there are manintenance Rx's to consider. Taken daily, these would help to prevent attacks/feeling as if an attack is coming on.
Talk to your doctor about
your options with SSRI's/SNRI's...
...or you could ask about
the possibility of other anti-anxiety/A/D's such as a Beta-blocker, an anxiolytic (Buspar), or an antihistamine (Vistaril) as other options.
Best wishes and keep posting.:)

Which med(s) are you referring to?
Some meds are required to be taken every day, preferably at the same time.
And some meds, like benzos, are meant to be used 'as needed.' In that case, yep, you take it when you feel your symptoms rushing over you and your initial coping skills don't seem to be doing the trick.
If that's the med you're referring to, ask your doc how frequently you may take this "as needed" med and go from there.

There are different types of "anxiety pills," cilly. There are some that need to be taken every day, whether you're experiencing anxiety or not.
There are others, like benzos, that are taken "as needed."
Do you know the name of the med or the type of med (what class/category)?
Definitely update your doc.
Sometimes they happen several times a day because we cycle and lose control. If we can stop the first one or two in their tracks, it can minimize the subsequent ones.

I wish I could just take something as needed. My doctor was weaning me of Zoloft and I was down to 25mgs once a day and I was hit was something stressful which affected my anxiety and my ability to sleep and she put me back on 50 mgs. My goal was to get off of Zoloft completely by September, but now I'm afraid to. I'm sleeping well now and I was able to get my anxiety under control very quickly so I feel like I know when I start feeling the first signs of it. If I could just take a benzo at the first sign of anxiety and get rid of it I would be happy. But I don't know if having the therapeutic dose of Zoloft in my system is what helped me get the anxiety under control so quickly, and whether taking a benzo at the first sign would have the same effect.

My doc prescribed me Ativan at first as needed. Then, when I asked to be switched to Xanax cause Ativan made me sleepy, the Xanax prescript
ion clearly states take 1 .5mg pill every 8 hours. Now, that said, there are no refills. So the next doc visit, I am going to try to convince im, because of the addictive nature, to switch me to Klonopin to try daily, at least until my stomach fully heals. I believe I can convince him, since Klonopin is less addictive, and many people have been on them for years daily.
Face it, if the med works, whether its a benzo or not, if one needs it, they need it. Deal with any withdrawal later, IMO.

T.,
...just be careful...a benzo is a benzo...to say that one is less addictive than another is a bit of a misconception...
To make an analogy of this...if Xanax is vodka...and Klonopin is beer...
...sure the vodka is gonna get you there quicker...
...but the beer lands you in the same spot eventually.
Talk
openly with your doc for best advice!

will do! Im from PA. I figure Xanax is a trip to Ohio, Klonopin Asia....lol. Seriously, if it eliminates the ups and downs of Xanax, and is less addictive and less withdrawals, ill try it. But of course, a nice long talk with the doc first. Thank you.

I dont think addiction is dose dependent. 2 yrs is a long time. If you need it, you need it. Its when you dont need it and want to come off it youll experience some issues.

The issue is even though we need the medication for anxiety, you will get withdrawals if you quit them, point blank, and xanax was the worst withdrawal I have ever experienced in my life.
I was on 2mg's 3 times a day, which is a high dose in my opinion, and when I had to quit cold turkey, it was the worst feeling ever, I would shake so bad I couldn't even type on the computer, my brain was foggy for months.
So going back on them has been a real scary thing, I am hoping if I do get off of them, my doctor will wean me off of them to ease the symptoms, but I need them, so I will have to worry about
the withdrawal when the time comes.

Ah benzo's!!! Currently I'm doing a "fun" taper off of xanax because I didn't follow my doctors orders to take as needed. Instead I was taking one a day (1/2 in morning, 1/2 in evening). The result even at this very low dose - physical dependency and a gradual taper to stop the meds. I tried stopping cold turkey and believe me it was not fun! So listen to your doctor and take only as prescribed!!!
