Anxiety levels off the roof, now 2 seizures after work.

I have been battling stress levels for a while now, I am concerned my job has pushed me to far, I recently experienced a very difficult day at work, I finished at work at 3pm on the Sunday, went home had something to eat and finally got to sleep at 6:30pm-7pm, I tool my avanza and went to bed.

I was down to work an extra at 2am the following day, so I crawled out of bed and had a shave and shower and got dressed , I walked out of the ensuite about 1:32am and that's when it got a bit weird.

I apparently freaked my wife out, apparently I blacked out but was still standing for about 5 mins, grouting like a zombie, I then collapsed on the ground and apparently had 2 seizures in approx 4 min period.

Somewhere around that time my wife called an ambulance for me.

Is there other types of seizures apart from epilepsy? Anyone else had something like that ?

What did the ED docs say?

I'm assuming they referred you to see your PCP immediately? From there, they might refer you to a neuro for further exams.

As for your question, my non-medical opinion is that seizures can be caused by a number of things, not just epilepsy.

I remember when I was very young my mother having seizures all the time. She never had epilipsy, she was under stress at the time and they called them pseudeo seizures. I have never heard of them till recently when I asked my pdoc about it.

Hi SH.,

I too want to know what the result of your ER visit was. Did they give you the result of your EEG? Have you since seen a neurologist?

I have heard of seizures as a rare effect of stress, but it is always a good idea, to be safe, to rule out any other underlying factors.

Please get a follow up appointment if you've not done so already.

I hope that your work schedule settles, and that you are able to get some good rest soon!

In the ER, they took blood work, MRI and they X-ray my back, I have a letter from the ER requesting I attend a seizure clinic for further testing, I am also not allowed to drive a car for 3-6 months.

Not sure what the ER meant but the ambulance lady, could have been her opinion but mentioned mirtzapine and the esclopram sorry can't remember how to spell it , it's a mood stabiliser. Apparently from what she told me is these 2 drugs are not friendly , whatever that means, I have heard from a few doctors they were concerned over the 2 but because they were one in the morning and one during bed that it was ok .

Also what is a EEC ?

Have you discontinued your benzo? I have only heard of seizures with abrupt cessation of heavy use...

However...this is definitely a question for your prescribing dr.

...whether your meds could be a factor.

I will make an appointment on Monday if I have not received a call or letter today.

I sent a letter to work, surprisingly the head honcho lady which I was expecting to be a twit has actually suprised me, offered me 2 months off plus whatever else I need , I have plenty of sick leave and a/l so that is a plus, sufficient for 6 months off if I need it .

Just resting up at the moment, I got a huge black eye, everything in my body hurts especially my back where my wife tried to move me, my tongue is feeling better today, couldn't eat the first day after it happened.

No they didn't do those tests at the ER, sounds like something the seizure clinic will test.

My dr doesn't think the drugs I am on are the problem, I been on both for almost 2 years.

Yeah, I was questioning the possibility of abruptly d/c'ing a benzo as yes, that's a very real potential contributing factor for possible seizures. But,...since you said that's not the case, it's good that you can rule that out.

I would get copies of your medical records and see them in person and review them, in person, with your PCP and get referred to a neurologist (and go over those results, in person).

Relying on verbal hear-say, regardless who said it, is ineffective.

When do I go? Mmmm that is a good question, my referral has gone to the clinic and they have a procedure that needs to be evaluated before I get an appointment. They told me if I have another seizure to go back to ER .

I went to my gp today and he said there isn't much he can do but I have a note from him that I don't have to go to work until 5th October , hopefully I get answers before then.

Not sure how I am going to get to work as I can't drive for 6 months and I wouldn't like to be stuck at home for 6 months.

Dx?

I have my appointment this Tuesday, finally I'm in after 5 weeks of waiting, better late than never.

I been feeling on edge last week or 2, back is stiffer than a surfboard, I really hope I get some answers.

Been listening to my favorite meditation audio every night this week, I just can't stop thinking about things, my 2 wonderful kids have been on fire this week, just trying to relax and stay calm.

Arghh and whoever made that minecraft game is just plain evil, my kids will not shut up about it

DX = diagnosis.

Have you had any more seizures? Sorry if you said and I missed it, but had you ever had seizures before the 2 you had in early September? Any history of seizures/epilepsy in your family?

Well at least you have been busy...nothing like being 'held hostage' to watch  your kids build yet another set of buildings on Mine Craft...I feel your pain, Lol!!! ;p

Let us know how your appointment goes.  I hope that you get some definitive answers, and a direction on how to proceed with treatment if any is needed.

Stresshead, It is possible to have a seizure without having epilepsy. Like the others have said already, it could have something to do with your meds, or it could be a one time occurrence.

The reason I say this, is because my husband suffered a seizure a few years ago, but when he went to the hospital ER, they did ALL the tests to rule out everything.

The reason for his seizure was stress. We were going through a very difficult time then, and he was so stressed out, he actually had a seizure from it. He hasn't had one since.

I am also questioning WHY they didn't do an EEG while you were in the hospital. That seems pretty negligent to me, but I'm not sure where you're from and they may have different "protocol" wherever you were.

I hope your tests turn out ok. Please keep us informed as to what the results are.

I had a seizure once before when I was younger at the age of 15 but I was on a roacutane which experimental but I learned that alcohol and the drug don't mix.

My fathers brother was on medication for epilepsy but hasn't had any since, don't really know too much about him as he lives pretty far away and don't see him much, I spoke to my parents that don't think it's anything to associate with but will mention it to the seizure clinic on Tuesday

Not sure why fox, both times no EEG but that's what I been trying to get into for the last 5 weeks.

I do know the last time my blood pressure was less than 50bpm which they thought was a concern, they spent most of the time building that up .

Well I had my appointment with the neurologist today, I have been told that because I have had 4 seizures in a 30 day window , that he believes it to be epilepsy.

He has ordered an EEG and an MRI to rule out some possible causes , he was the head of neurology and he sounded like he knew what he was talking about and was quite thorough .

My mother thinks I should get a second opinion , I have started taking Valpro 200, which I have been told is anti-seizure medication , I am currently taking 1 tablet for the next fortnight and then if I am not drowsy the want me to take 2, one in the morning and one at dinner.

I will follow up the appointments and go from there.

Good job on getting to that appointment and on your way towards a definitive Dx...and treatment that will help you!

Still a few things to do in order to get a clearer picture, but you are on your way for sure.

So glad you're getting the tests run. I'm Sure it's stressful but once they know definitively what's going on, you can get treated properly.

I thought you'd only had 2 seizures that one day. Didn't know you'd had 4. It'll be such a relief to prevent these from happening. Are you ok with the diagnosis if it is epilepsy? At least it's a treatable disorder and folks live a happy, normal with it.
