Anxious about shampoo in ear

When I was in the shower Thursday night, foamy shampoo got in my ear and I couldn't hear for a second. I thought it would go away but today my ear is still clogged and won't pop. I have anxiety about my ears and dizziness so I'm probably making this more than it is. Anyway, is the shampoo just going to come out by itself? Thanks for your time

It will be ok. It happens to me too & it's upsetting.

Have you tried a Q-Tip to lightly swirl around in there? I've put rubbing alcohol on the tip of one & swirled around in my ear when I've gotten water in my ear from swimming. The alcohol dries up the water. My nurse friend told me that trick. She does it too.

It'll be ok I promise. If you're not comfortable using a Q-Tip, wet a washrag, squeeze water out the roll the corner up and swirl the corner around in your ear to clean it out.

Water trapped in the ear (matters not if it's mixed with shampoo or not) can cause a middle ear infection...commonly referred to as Swimmer's Ear.

There is a product by the same name that you can buy at the pharmacy...which is basically and alcohol based solution...that you can use to clear up the trapped water.

Try this first, and if it doesn't clear it up...make a call and talk to your doctor about whether you should be checked...just to prevent or rule out and infection.

Either way...this is common and easily treatable, so no worries!

I understand totally, I also get very anxious whenever my ears feel funny. It will go away soon.

Thanks for the responses. I heard thought that putting a qtip or anything in your ear just pushes the water go in deep

Yes, do not put q-tips in your ears, you are not supposed to.

Take comfort in the fact that probably everyone has gotten shampoo in their ears at one point or another; it's very common, and not dangerous. The body naturally heals itself and corrects itself. It will most likely come out by itself. (This summer, I got swimmers ear, it really hurt a lot, I almost went to the dr, but then it cleared up on its own.) If it doesn't clear up on its own, then a dr can very easily fix it. My husband once had a dr do it, when he was on vacation, no big deal. :)

Have you tried lying down with that ear against a pillow for a couple hours? That usually works for me (if I don't want to get pillow wet, I'll put a small towel or washcloth under my ear).
