We really should have a sticky with mental health acronyms! I had a whole test in college over this lol.
In my experience, psychiatrists (medical doctors), are only for diagnosing and medicine management. Some do psychotherapy (aka "talk therapy"), but often refer you out for psychotherapy.
Common therapist ("talk therapists") abbreviations are:
LMFT- Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist
MSW- Masters in Social Work
LCSW- Licensed Clinical Social Worker
PsyD - Doctorate in Psychology (not a medical doctor)
There are many others and individual states have different requirements.
When in doubt, Google the letters after their name
Cornell- you aren't in talk therapy? If not, I highly recommend it!!!
Marj- let us know later how your first appt goes. Suggestion: make a list of things you are wanting to work on in therapy and what your struggles are. Today's appt will likely just be an intake of information and rapport building so don't be disappointed if you don't get into the talk therapy part today.
Sending everyone hugs!
