Hi Roger and welcome.
First of all, I want to send my condolences in regards to the loss of your father, and your mother's declining health. These things are certainly understandable triggers for anxiety.
Yes, often we seek to self medicate...which seems like a good solution, but ultimately we find it is a trap...often prepetuating the problem and impeding healing.
So good job on recognizing the need to quit the drinking, and putting a plan into action!
I think that your doctor was making an attempt to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. It was likely his hope that by lowering your anxiety with the Rx...you would be less likely to imbibe.
However, it sounds to me as if trying to stop drinking, along with the side effects of your start up...may be a lot to take on at this time.
The thing with SSRI's is that often you feel worse, before starting to feel better. Ironically physical and mental symptoms will increase during the first few weeks...until the system adjusts and theraputic benefits start.
Talking with your doctor about
alternatives could help. At this time, I also think that a referral to a
therapist to help you through this difficult time if crucial.
Also, are you a part of a 12 step? How about
a sponsor? Both of these will help give you the added support you need during this time.
