I'm not one to google symptoms/side effects because I will 'have' all of them, but unfortunately I came across an article at my docs office today about serotonin syndrome. I'm just wondering because I don't want to research anything... Is it's onset sudden? or do the symptoms come on gradually? I've been taking lexapro for over a week and would hopefully be out of the clear of developing this? Thanks for any reassurance/information.

This would not be concern for someone who is simply taking their prescribed dose of SSRI.

Serotonin Syndrome is rare, and is usually the result of long term over use of multiple medications that combine to create the issue.

scaredy cat, can you get it from long term use of your SSRI? I've been on Zoloft for awhile- I never take more than what's prescribed- but can I get this?

It is extremelely unlikely that a person taking their SSRI as prescribed...even in long term use, to develop SS.

This is usually the result of an existing higher/maxed out dose, coupled with another Rx being introduced.

That is why it is important to have the same prescribing doctor if possible for all of your meds....or at least have your doctors aware of your Rx list.

You do not sound like you are at risk at all...no worries! :)
