Hi all! I'm new to this forum I think. Anybody dx'd with ADD?

Hi, I was finally dx'd several years ago and put on Strattera. I grew up with ADD, before there was a name for it. My current psychiatrist thinks I have bipolar depression, despite having previous dx's depression and anxiety. She is against prescribing for the ADD, saying it might put me in a manic state even though I've never ever experienced a manic state. I'm really discouraged and down because the ADD is giving me grief.

Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?? Please!?

I'm not sure why you were dx'd with bi-polar without ever having a manic state, but I'm not a doctor. I was dx'd with bi-polar over 25 years ago, but haven't had a manic state in over 5 years, just deep depression so my doctor says now I have major depression. I don't have ADD so I can't really answer you question there. But if you aren't happy with your dx'd or the treatment you are getting you are more then welcome to find a new doctor. If your current dr isn't listening to you or helping you, then why stay? Find a new one. I'm sure others will be by shortly to reply, this time of day is pretty slow for the forums. Early morning it is more active so you'll likely have more replies tomorrow.

You might not be getting a lot of responses because this is the anxiety forum, and I'm sure not a lot of us have advice to share with you. You might find more help in an ADD/Depression forum. But this site is a wonderful tool, so you've come to the right place!

Thx. AngelLisa and ManicMarj. She told me I have bipolar 2 and people with that will get hypomania. No I have never had a manic state.

Hi Spicey and welcome!

Sorry for the late response, Thursdays can be really busy for me.

My daughter has a dx of bipolar 2 and ADD. Her ADD being mild was only treated with the use of coping skills...so that is something you may want to look into learning to help with transitioning off the Strattera.

However, you know your needs best...and if this change is just too difficult, then I would encourage you to advocate for yourself and speak up to your P-doc, or seek a second opinion.

Was a mood stabilizing Rx mentioned, such as Lamictal? (or other mood stabilizer?) This was what was prescribed for my daughter's BP 2.
