Day 7 on Zoloft and I have never felt worse

I was prescribed Zoloft a week ago, and I have been taking it everyday. I was on Celexa before (about a year ago) and I don't remember feeling worse. I am really upset and I can't stop crying. I couldn't sleep last night and I woke up an hour and a half before my alarm went off, and I couldn't go back to sleep. I woke up in a state of panic and my head felt heavy and tingly. I want to get better, I want to stop thinking I am dying of a brain tumor, but I can't take this :(

{{{Hugs}}} I am sorry you are feeling so bad, please know that sometimes when starting an AD you'll feel worse before you start to feel better. You've got 7 days down and the side effects should start going away in the next week or two, so give it a chance. The theory is that if you have bad side effects, it's a good sign that the AD will work for you, of course this is just a theory and something I heard along time ago and I don't know if it is true or not, but keep it in mind. I know it's hard, and it really sucks but you've gone this long stick with it a little longer and you should start feeling better.

If you don't feel better in a week or so I would call your prescribing doctor and have a chat with them and see if there is anything they recommend.

I am sorry to hear that you are going through the first week of SSRI medication.
Why I say so? Because it's pretty common to experience increased anxiety in the first week after you start medication. But that is all, trust me. I take sertraline medication and I experienced the same things. I assure you it is just a bit more anxiety and nothing physical.

Please don't give up, in the end of first month you will be feeling a lot better. And this increased anxiety is not going to continue more than a week, so.

Hang in there, I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you all. I am trying to fight through this, I don't wish anxiety on anyone :( It's a hard illness to fight. I know that there is a way out, but right now I feel like I am trying to swim to the surface and I almost get there and I am pulled back down. Drowning.

It is sure a big struggle and we all feel like that from time to time. But it gradually gets better, that is for sure!
It never gets worse actually, this is what my dr told me recently in therapy. It's just because of our thoughts and the struggle is tough / very real.

We are here for you, please don't give up.
If you didn't consider therapy yet, I really recommend CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) if you have a chance to check it out, do it. It is really helping a lot. Though, takes a little time.

Hi HB,

I am hoping you are feeling a bit better today? Perhaps this weekend you can rest/relax/get distracted with something fun and it will be the turnaround that have anticipated.

Often the first couple of weeks are the toughest...so you may be getting to the peak of the s/e's...and will start to feel relief soon.

If you feel however, that you can't make it through the weekend without some guidance/help from your doctor, go ahead and give them a call today.

Otherwise, use your coping/relaxation exercises to help you through...and keep posting for support!

Rrakkma - I have an appointment set up for Thursday for CBT. I am very eager to start! I have heard good things :)

Thank you all for the replies. I am going to give it more time, my doc said 2-3 weeks and it's only been a little over a week. Thank you for all the support!

It does take time and it depends on the person, but 6-8 weeks is what it takes to work. Just hang in there and maybe talk to your doctor about adding a benzo just meanwhile the Zoloft starts to work.
