Hi Cait and welcome!
I used to have the same issue...I would be fine until it was time to sleep...but then the worries would start.
I had a bad experience in a hotel room while my husband and I were trying to have a rare overnight date without kids (came down with a horrible stomach virus)....and after that, I was really anxious to sleep away from home for awhile.
Facing my fears and using positive mantras helped me through, and now I am able to travel with no/little issues!
I think that your method of pushing yourself in stages is a good one...and it will eventually pay off, as you realize that nothing bad (besides feeling anxious) has ever really happened.
Using phrases such as:
"I am okay, this is just anxiety making me feel this way."
"I can do this, I have been in this situation before and come through just fine."
"I am safe wherever I am, and can get help if I need it."
...or whatever helps to counter your worries.
We also have great relaxation coping skills in our Resources here that you really should check out. The breathing, meditation and other exercises are very effective at reducing overall anxiety levels. Here is the link:

In the future if this is still an issue for you...I would recommend seeking some therapy specifically for this...and possibly an as needed Rx for the anxiety while traveling. These are both things to discuss with your doctor.
I hope that this trip is a happy and anxiety free one for you! We are cheering you on.
Will you report back and let us know how it went?
