Thinking of trying an SSRI - what has worked for you?

Anyone who doesn't mind sharing, I'd like to hear what medications have worked well for you. I took Celexa 10 years ago for social anxiety & I'm not sure if it worked but I don't recall any side effects. I quit after a year. Then two summers ago, the last time I was very sick with anxiety, I tried Prozac. I had terrible side effects & quite after 45 days. I haven't been on anything since. I don't like medication. But since this episode of anxiety I'm experiencing has been going on for months, I might cave & try something again. The question is... what? What to take?! There are success & horror stories about every medication available.

I have GAD, and I'm suffering from a very bad bout of health anxiety right now. I had two panic attacks this summer but don't generally have Panic Disorder. Any advice on meds?

I see my primary care physician in 2.5 weeks.

I'm on Zoloft... It curbs my anxiety, but I don't have GAD, just panic attacks. It works for me!

I have been noticing that when certain people take a medication that works for them, but poops out, that there are other certain medications that seem to work without major issues.

For instance, in the past I have tried Zoloft, Prozac, Lexapro, Cymbalta and many others...but they didn't agree with me.

I have had success with Paxil, Effexor XR, and Celexa. Those 3 seem to be my agreeable drugs for anxiety and panic.

Just wanted to share my thoughts. I hope you get the relief you need soon!!

Effexor has a long shelf life. I reinstated it a second time with good success until it pooped again. on Lexapro now. and a mood stabiliser and mirtazapine at night.

zoloft -worked execellent for 6 years. tried prozac for a few months but it gave me hives at a higer dose and was too strong. every day was like an acid trip.

So a lot of you are saying that after months or years, the medication you were taking will stop working? I've never stuck to anything that long to know what that's like. My therapist is anti-medication for the most part though she supports my choice if I decide to try something. But if I'm still feeling this low when I see my doctor, I think I'm going to try something like Celexa again.

Lexotan works well for me...with no real side effects.

Hi Pink!

Unfortunately it is trial and error. I had the best luck with Zoloft and Trazadone.

I'm also considering going on a SSRI to help with my GAD, although I have been having more frequent panic attacks.

I am sure you and your doctor will find one that works. Don't be discouraged if you have to wait until it is in your system, which can take several weeks.

Good luck and keep us posted on what you find out.

Hi

This is a tough question to answer as we all react differently to antidepressants and what works well for one person may not work as well for another.

I have tried many AD over the years and I am currently taking 2 Prozac & Mirtazapine and have found this to be a good combination for me and my anxiety/depression. The best AD I have taken is Lexapro but as mentioned above it stopped working after a couple of years which seems to be the norm.

It is important to remember that medication is not a cure all they will only help ease your symptoms so the best way to beat your anxiety/depression is by doing some talking therapy and using self help.

I have to agree with all others, as Anti Depressants have different effects on people.

I am on Zoloft, too. It is absolutely very effective when it comes to anxiety and panic issues and I got lots of benefits from it.

Though, I can't say SSRIs give much help on my health anxiety problem, since Hypochondria treatment requires a religiously strict talk therapy like CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy). This is much more beneficial than medication when it comes to Hypochondria. One must fight their way with a therapy to treat it, because it is a problem of thought patterns.

I'm on a low dose of Zoloft. It seems to do the trick for me.

I don't have the drive and motivation I used to, but I also don't have the depression and anxiety either.

If I thought that a higher dose would bring back my enthusiasm for life I'd try it, but I don't know if these drugs work that way.

wh ats your dose? i stayed on 50 mg and that was just right for me. zoloft gets more intense as the dose goes up. i have much more drive and motivation (and sex drive) now that i am off. if you need it -then you need it.i recommend the lowest dose thats effective for you. main thing is it stopped your depression and anxiety.

I'm on 25mg. It seems to be a happy medium for me, and if I decide to stop taking it it should be a lot easier than if I was on 200mg.
