FREAKING OUT Neti Pot!!!!

I had previously used a Neti Pot 6 months ago with tap water and then was told that you aren't supposed to use tap water because of a brain eating amoeba. I vowed to never use a Neti pot again because it scared me so bad. Well I bought another one a week ago and filled it with distilled water and the premixed salt stuff but then freaked out and did it use it so I dumped it out. Well I had a bad sinus headache today and broke down and decided to use the Neti pot. I realized I hadn't let it dry out before so I cleaned it with distilled water and antibacterial soap just in case and then put in distilled water and the salt stuff. After doing this I am now scared that stuff had grown in it over the last week since I didn't let it dry out and even though I cleaned it I am now scared I am going to die from some amoeba or bacteria going up my nose!!

Not possible.

You used distilled water in the first place...and beyond that, you rinsed that out before replacing it with the fresh solution.

You have absolutely no reason to be worried! :)

I hope your sinuses clear and your headache goes away soon!!

The brain eating amoeba, while a real thing, only lives in lakes/ponds/streams. When water goes into a treatment plant, chlorine and other chemicals are added, so the amoeba cannot survive. Distilled or tap water is perfectly safe. :)

you can boil the tap water and this makes it safe to use in the neti. this is how i do it

I don't understand this thread at all and I'll explain why.

I don't know what a "Neti Pot" is and in my country (Ireland) we do drink tap water (We are advised not to drink tap water when we visit foreign countries such as Spain though).

However, my understanding of amoeba is that it originates in natural water sources such as ponds/lakes, whereas water from a tap is treated long before it is consumed.

I still don't understand why you can't use tap water, where do you live?

We can drink tap water. A Neti pot is used to irrigate sinuses when you have colds or allergies. It is advised not to use tap water to go up sinuses because two people died from using tap water in their Neti pots that ended up having this amoeba

The instructions do say not to use tap water...I am sure that it just a precaution, being that tap water is treated...but anytime you are flushing water up into your sinuses...why not be sure it is the purest possible right? Also, this reduces the chance of irritation from the additives. (chlorine/fluoride)

Anyway, I have used one on occasion for years, and never had a problem. Bobbyanne will be just fine! :)
