Hi!
I'm curious to know if anyone here has been admitted (either voluntarily or forcefully) to a psychiatric hospital. What were you admitted for and what was your experience like?
Thank you!

Hi
I have never been admitted to a psychiatric hospital so can't comment but I know some of the members here have so hopefully they will be able to offer you some input.

I went in about 2.5 years ago after I had stopped heavy drinking several months before and my anxiety was off the charts relentless for about 3 months. I couldn't sleep, waking hours except for a few in the evening were awful, blood pressure was high and I was losing weight.
Honestly, aside from the "stigma" I felt going there at first, it was one of the best experiences for my mental health and put me on the right track. Even today I am thankful for the experience.
They were able to give me some meds that initially calmed me down and lowered my blood pressure, and also helped me sleep. I was able to work with a very experienced psychiatrist who got things under control for me which allowed my brain to slowly process it all and move forward. To this day, he is my Pdoc. I also saw people there with much worse issues than myself (psychoses, schizophrenia, etc...) and it helped me realize I could get through what I was dealing with.
I know everyone's experience varies, but for me it helped get things back on track.

are you looking into an admission? both. is my answer. most were voluntary and much needed. i have had over 25 admissions over the stretch. 6 private psych hospitals. had private health ins and stayed each time around 4 months. the public were short stays bar when i had ECT. some were dives, others better. the public ones weren't the best, but are improving. it is a chance for stabilisation and security of oneself.

My PDoc asked me to meet her there, her rooms are not far from the hospital just to see her other patients , she said to me if i don't pull up my socks I will end up in that ward..my goodness I couldn't believe that people can be so depressed ...I don't wish any one to go there ,I know some days are awful, problems come and go...but let's hang in there and do the coping skills.

I went to the psychiatric hospital own my own. I have depression, anxiety, panic attacks. I was suicidal and called my mother and she told me to wake my husband and go to the hospital now! I stayed three days. That is the best thing I ever did for myself. I went to emotions anonyomous for two years where you share your thoughts. They also have been were I was. It helped a lot. I am now doing great. I see my psychiatric doctor since then. I am on paxil and clonopin. Talk to someone you trust!!!!!!

My dad was admitted via court order. He had Alzheimer's pretty bad and walked out his assisted living place. He went across the street and scared some poor woman and her kids to death. Luckily the police knew where he came from and took him back.
The facility was pretty well known but the care was a little lacking. Other patients kept walking off with his clothes etc.

I went yesterday to the ER and they did nothing for me medication wise, but they did refer me to a psychiatrist and the wait would be much shorter than if I were to call because I went in. If I didn't have 4 kids I would definitely admit myself because it seems like nobody understands me and just shrugs off my concerns. I have generalized anxiety disorder social anxiety depressive disorder post traumatic stress disorder panic disorder and right now going through postpartum anxiety and depression. /-:

I've been in the hospital twice. I have bipolar disorder. I went in once for mania and once for depression. Both were good experiences. They really allowed me to rest and there was group therapy, crafts, etc to help you. I was lucky because in both cases my work insurance paid for most of it. I was really sick both times. the mania was out of control, i was barely sleeping and just running around looking for trouble. the depression was bad, i felt so horrible and nothing would help. All I could do was sit there.
I actually look back fondly at both experiences. There were good doctors and good staff. They really cared about making you better. I was fortunate because I had friends and family come visit me. And, as another persons shared, I saw people that were so much worse than I was. It really made me realize that I could be a lot worse.
