E, there are several type of sleep apnea. The most common one is obstructive sleep apnea. This type happens when the throat muscles intermittently relax & block the airway during sleep. A noticeable sign of this type is snoring. Here are the typical symptoms;
excessive daytime sleepiness
loud snoring
observed episodes of stopped breathing during sleep (by another person)
abrupt awakenings accompanied by gasping or choking
waking with a dry mouth or sore throat
morning headaches
difficulty concentrating during the day
mood changes such as depression or irritability
high blood pressure
decreased libido
The above symptoms are on the Mayo Clinic's website.
The symptoms you discussed with the dentist are not on this list. I am surprised at the dentist even making the suggestion. If you have been stressed/anxious more lately, certainly that will affect you sleep. Grinding your teeth, stress will cause this with many of us. As a dentist, she should have been able to look at your teeth to look for damage to your teeth from grinding them. They makes plastic mouth guards available in drugstores for people that grind their teeth.
I worked in a high stress job & would grind my teeth at night & caught myself during the day doing it. The next morning my jaws would ache from a night of grinding. The plastic piece helped a lot, plus it made me feel better knowing I wasn't damaging my teeth.
Both my husband & son have apne. My husband will not use a CPAP machine, his is severe. He snores like a freight train, I sleep with ear plus. When he sits down he falls asleep within minutes, in bed he jerks awake. At night he flips & flops so bad he is like a fish out of water. But, his is severe. He has nearly every symptom lon this list. My son has the machine & says he sleeps the best he has ever. He no longer wakes up tired, he is rested. Most of all he no longer snores!
Check out the Mayo Clinics site & read up about this. Unless you are having symptoms listed above this does not sound like sleep apnea. I am not a dr but have good knowledge of it, lol.
