Withdrawal from Pexeva!?

I've been feeling sick now for 3 weeks. I started to wonder if I was going nuts, because it just didn't make sense. I felt like I had the flu- aches and pains, stiff joints, no energy, I kept having fevers/chills, dizziness and in addition- really awful nightmares! Well we have been trying to figure out if it was a food allergy maybe, or maybe our detergent, or perhaps a soap. I've been irritable, can't sleep- the nightmares when I do. I've had horrible headaches, an although those aren't new- I've had 2-3 a week lately and that IS odd. The worst is that my head and scalp have itched like mad (I've scratched it till it's full of scabs, yuck!) I figured it had to be an allergy to shampoo, or maybe a recent hair dye experience- but it's still happening right now weeks later. So I started wondering what the living heck? I knew it couldn't all just be anxiety- I've never had a problem with hypochondria, although I know some do and it's a horrible thing to go through. With the nightmares for example, I didn't even know I was having them until my fiance told me about it because he kept having to wake me up to stop them. He isn't sick at all and I have already tried changing every darn lotion, soap, detergent etc- in the whole house- and it didn't help the itching.

Well last night, I did some research online in desperation- and read that these (and others) are among the reported symptoms of withdrawal from Pexeva. My doctor started trying to take me off it a month ago (notice the timing!) I didn't see that it was helping me at all (the Welbutrin XL seemed to do the job alone) so she wanted to take me off it. I didn't know though, that it can be very addictive and that the FDA warns that it can have a severe withdrawal period, lasting supposedly 2-4 weeks, but more people report up to 8 weeks- with some being put BACK on it because the symptoms were intolerable. I had no idea this might happen with Pexeva, and was taken by surprise.

We went from my full dose of 40mg down to 20mg. In fairness, she wanted me at 30 in between, but the pharmacy screwed up too, and gave me 20mg instead. Granted- this possiblity should have occured to me sooner, being that I'd gone through hades once before when coming off Zoloft. But OUCH! No way do I want to complain and be put back at full dose- then I will just have to go through this all over again, and the past 3 weeks have been for nothing. Since the med never helped me anyway, we tried it out in hopes it would, but it made no marked difference- it seems doubly wrong to become dependent upon it considering. Anyone else had this problem with Pexeva?

I suggest you go back on it for a while and see what happens

its a prozac type med, also known as paxil

it does have a reputation for severe after effects sometimes, usually called paxil discontinuation syndrome

despite it being heavily advertised and promoted, I would avoid it for this reason, and take some other prozac type instead

many docs sadly rely totally on drug co sales reps for their meds prescribing info and of course the paxil discontinuation problem is never mentioned

other antidepressants arent known to have such severe discontinuation problems

Thanks Harry! I'm so glad someone has heard of this before that I can talk to. I still haven't called my doctor.. I'm afraid she's going to tell me to go back to the full mg and I will have to repeat this process :( I know I need to do it though.. I will make myself call her tomorrow. I'm just hoping she doesn't think I'm just panicking or overreacting- because I honestly never even thought about it being connected until yesterday.

I have been on and off anti-depressents for anxiety/panic attacks for over 15 years now.  I just tried a new one and it stopped working after 2 months.  I did not understand why until I read the book 'The Mood Cure' by Julia Ross.  This is the best book I have ever bought.  Not only does it tell you natural supplements to take to ease the withdrawl symptoms, you find out through questionaires what is really wrong with you and it then tells you what to take that is natural to balance out what is wrong with your body chemistry.  This book has literally saved my life!!!!  I will never take another anti-depressent again when there are natural remedies out there that work for me.

Unfortunately, I started pexeva about 7 months ago. I'm the type of person that just takes asprin on occassion and hates taking medication. On the insistance of friends and family I got on this antidepression. I was going thru a horrible divorce and because of the stress my weight had dropped down to 103.
Now that that's all behind me, I winged myself off this medicine and I'm on the third week and it seems my withdraws are getting worse. I have what feels like a 'shocking' sensation to my body, muscles ache, body temp is below normal, nausious, feel aggrivated, and eyesight gets blurry.
I curse the day I got on it! I'm worse off now then I ever was. Has anyone found something 'naturally' to help your body get through this?

My withdrawl from Pexeva story....

I'm currently on day 9 of my last dose of Pexeva. Had been on anti-depressants for 17 years, and finally my doc felt ready that I could come off. We weaned down from 60mg, and now at day 9, the withdrawl symptoms seem a bit better, but not much.....

What are the symptoms?

1. I remember every dream vividly after not remembering any dreams for 17 years. So vivid, that I wake up every 20 minutes and can tell you details about the ruts in a dirt road it's so vivid. And the dreams are usually a life-threatening car wreck....it's like the movie you can't turn away from...

2. Un-natural body aches, stiffness, a near-complete knotting up of my achillies and right shoulder. I wake up every morning feeling like I helped someone move.

3. A complete lack of sleep. 13 hours in 9 days, folks!

4 Restlessness, shaking, irritability, and a racing heart

5. Racing thoughts and manic highs, I've been blogging like crazy and journaling left and right

6. Stiff joints

7. Breakouts of acne all over my face

8. Inability to let a point go in an argument....I'm being 'right at the top of my lungs' and it's killing relationships

9. Loss of appetite or desire to drink alcohol (pretty good things there!)

10. Loss of sex drive....

I realize I've joined an old thread, but I did a search and this is the first one that came up.....

Good Morning,

I have not heard of this drug until just now but on research it seems Pexeva and  Paxil are  the same.   You may want to search Paxil withdrawal and you will come up with lots of hits I suspect.

Pexeva is paroxetine mesylate and Paxil is paroxetine hydrochloride. While the FDA says they are identical, because they are different salts of paroxetine the FTC and Patent and Trademark Office consider the two drugs different products.

Pexeva appears to be more costly then Paxil and may be why you did not find posts from people who are on this medication.
