Vistaril, Hydroxyzine

HI all, I went to the doctor this morning and asked for an anti-anxiety medication to get me through our disney world vacation that we are taking this week, and she gave me a prescription for Vistaril, Hydroxyzine ?  Has anyone ever taken this and it has helped or not helped your anxiety?   I have never heard anything about it so I was just wondering!!

its an older antihistamine, these sedate some as a side effect and were popular as tranquillisers before valium came along

not as good as valium but better than nothing

try it before you leave to see how you react

trazodone is an antidepressant that sedates some people and is prescribed as a sleeping pill, it may work for daytime anxiety or may send you to sleep, or occasionally stimulate you, you would have to take it and see what happens

any valium type med would be better but some docs wont prescribe them

I was on hydroxyzine pamoate (I know there are at least 2 different forms because the pharmacy once gave me the wrong one, not pamoate and they said there was a difference) for my anxiety some time ago.  Basically, it's in the theory that whatever makes you tired (as antihistimines often do) calms you down.  I took it for a while and as I remember it seemed to work fairly well or I wouldn't have taken it for so long.  I stopped taking it because I became pregnant and my med doctor said it wasn't ok to take during that time.  I don't remember anything bad (side effects wise) about it except maybe extreme sleepiness right at the very beginning.  Even if this is no help, I thought maybe you might want to hear from someone who'd actually taken it for anxiety before.  I'd say it's worth a try.  Good Luck!!!
