pet food recall anxiety

Well as luck would have it, I have been feeding my two cats food that has been recalled.  I live alone and my cats are my babies, this is pretty upsetting for me.  I called their vet and she wants me to bring them in for blood work, it will be between $60-$80 for both of them to be tested.  So far they are both ok but I'm not sure I want to risk not getting them tested.  I don't really have that kind of money right now but if they got sick from it that would be worse.  Kidney failure and death scares me when it concerns them.  I guess I'll take them in the morning.  I hope everyone else's pets are ok from this.

Yes, take them. It's only a matter of time before a class-action suit is filed. Make sure you're part of the class and you should get most if not all of your money back. Save the containers.

I didn't know the FDA had any jurisdiction over pet food. It's good that they do.

I know it is rough when you are a little low as most of us do get at times but for them and your piece of mind I would take them

  Was it wet food or dry food that you are feeding them and what brand of food as my wife works at a heath food/feed store and has more info on this then most ppl do and so far it seems to be just the wet food that is being recalled right now but I can get more info on it tommorow for you as they have been getting the facts about this.

They have been eating Iams Select Cuts soft food in the pouches. They also eat Iams dry but there is not a problem with it. I went to the Iams site and looked up the serial numbers and they are in the batches that may be bad.

I took them to the vet this morning for the blood work and it was only $54 for both of them. That's a lot better than $80 for me. The vet should call me tomorrow morning with the results. I think they are just checking their kidney function but I'm not sure. I didn't get to talk to the vet they just took the cats in back and got the blood. I'm trying very hard not to freak out and to think positive about it. So far I'm mostly ok.

There was a pretty informative story about this in the local news last night. It seems that dogs and cats who haven't yet become symptomatic have an excellent prognosis. They said that kidney problems can be treated successfully with hydration. Is their appetite and energy level okay?

The bad news is, this company (Menu Foods) appears to have known about the problem for a month and it sounds like they were a little slow to recall. They're already offering "compensation" to those who've had pets die, but so far nothing about compensation for vet bills. I'd imagine they'll do that on an individual basis, though, and if they don't they're going to get sued. After you get the test results back, write them a letter and include the invoice from your vet clinic, even if everything checks out okay. They ought to reimburse you for that and the cost of the food. That would be better than joining a class action, probably.

Companies, like people, need to be accountable for what they do. In this case their negligence has caused a scare throughout the US and Canada.

if you worry too much about ebverything  get a self help biik on how tio stop worrying and follow its advice

give the cats lots to drink

ocd, which I also hAVE, IS NEEDLESS TO SAY,an anxiety disorder so any relaxation that works will reduce it

excessive worry doesnt help you in any way and is just a bad habit, Ive met people who have worried their way into mental hospitals as patients

  It seems like it is mainly just the wet food that was bad and they been getting calls left and right about it what info they do have on it is the same you can get off of there web site as they are telling ppl to go to there site on the net for the info on it and it seems that non of it came here to Alaska but more so the lower 48. Sorry I couldn't help out with it but I do hope your cat gets better soon and I have hear that the first lawsuit's have been filed on this recall now so you may look into this too

I saw last night on the network news that Menu Foods, Inc had recently made a deal with a new supplier for the "gelatin filler" in the wet food, and that's what is causing the problem.

On the local news here...geniuses that they are....they'll just show photos of any kind of pet food (wet or dry) and say there's been a recall and you're pet's dying. More at 11.

Yellow journalism. Helps no one, but I guess it's good for ratings.

DID you KNOW what is the cause!in this pet Food Scare? WHEAT_GLUTIN !!!! look it up if you do not belive me! THIS is the same stuff you feed your children and yourselfs daily!This is the same stuff, which cause the root of my Panic ATTACKS!!!!,I found that I was allergic to this stuff, along with barley and oats.it is a protien which hold the fiber together. the stringy stuff when flour get wet. also I would not dought that it also was contamnated with fungus which give off a mycotoxin even if the the fungus is dead or alive!I do not eat this stuff anymore and feel a 100% better!going on 4 weeks!

I work at a veterinary clinic and you did the best thing by getting them tested. I would ask your vet what brand of food they would suggest to feed you cats in the meantime. I feed my cats canned food so it is hard just to feed them dry. You can also make your own cat food if it makes you feel any better. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Also give your vet a call if you have questions too, that's what they are there for. If it eases your mind then it that is the safest way to go. I keep my fingers crossed for your kitties.

Chickensoup, I think you might've found my problem. I felt really great today, even though I didn't take my meds...and all I ate was salad. My anxiety began kicking in 2 month ago, some time after I lost my job. And what do you eat when you're 25 and you lose your job? Cheap food mostly made of wheat, like bread and pastas... I've had digestion problems now and then, and my skin has been groing weird spots for a couple of month. If there is a link, it's gonna be the greatest news of my life!

I'll try a gluten free diet, and if it works, I owe you real friggin big! Any test you can pass to know if you're intolerant to gluten other than trying not to eat it?

It's shocking, as over in England, Iams and Eukanuba are brand name pet foods. Usually a little expensive than the others. Personally after hearing about this, even though it only hit the US, I wouldn't use any variety of menu foods again.

As people have already said, the best way to treat kidney problems are with tons of fluid. I'm not sure how possibl it is too make a cat drink lots of fluids.

I really feel for you right now. My cat is also my baby. She see's me as mummy and hates leaving my side, even when I go to the bathroom. She hates it when I'm away for more than 2 days, and gets really mad about it. When I have to go in hospital for 2-3 weeks, she really hates it,and after a week starts to scratch and hiss at my bf. Something I've never actually witnessed her do. I hope the blood tests find both your cats in perfect health, so they can get on with hunting down mice (Probably a healthier breakfast for them than Iams.)

PS. Also bluemeanies..........are you a wrestling fan by any chance? Just wondering as Blue Meanie is one of my favourite wrestlers. scool

I am not a wrestling fan Darkies Gem. I got bluemeanies because I was feeling blue and kind of mean (I have arthritis, crohn's disease, depression and thyroid problems along with anxiety/panic) when I joined healingwell and also they were a character in The Yellow Submarine movie from the Beatles.

My one cat, Dupree, who was poisoned is doing a little better finally. He is now on a prescription diet (expensive food). He almost died and was in the hospital getting iv fluids for three days and has been home 7 days now. He is not the same cat he was. He does not have as much energy and sleeps much deeper now. He is having short peroids of feeling good and playing. I am so angry and sad about all of this. So many people lost their pets or now have damaged pets.

I just went out at lunch today and bought a water dish that filters and keeps the water moving so it's clean and fresh. I also am buying cans of tuna and keeping it in the refridgerator and mixing the juice with a little water for him. This weekend I'm going to put the tuna and some water in the blender to give him thru the week.

Thanks for the concern about my babies.
