Can prospective employer require a Physical?

Here I am again - the health anxiety and doctor phobic member who was finally able to land a great job (starting April 16th) with full benefits at a huge corporation that should provide me with job security I haven't had in ten years!  Here's the deal - I'm terrified that they might require me to have a physical - and as I've said so many times before - my BP spikes even higher than usual when I go, and I'm convinced that whatever they find will cause me to lose the job because they'll uncover that deadly disease I've been hiding from so long, and convinced I must have.

I'm just working as an Administrative Assistant which doesn't require any hard physical work so I'm not even sure they WILL require it but I'm consumed with fear about the whole thing - what a nut case I am.  Anyway, does anyone know if a comopany can retract an offer if you refuse a physical exam?

I do not think for that type of job they would require a physical...Nor could they probably deny you employment based on anything not involved in your ability to perform the job. If it was a Physically intensive job I would say yes they may require it. As far as an AA position I would doubt it. Only possibility would prolly be a drug test but that would depend upon the company in which you were applying.

As far as I know, most physicals only require a paper history of major medical conditions, a skin TB test, and a drug urine test. They're not trying to find something that would prevent you from working there, they just want to make sure 1) you don't have TB because its very contagious (and also very RARE) but treatable, and 2) they do not want someone on drugs working for them. At least that is what my last "company physical" required of me. I wouldn't worry too much at all about it, they're definitly not going to be doing extensive bloodwork or anything like that.

I shouldn't think that such a job would require you to have a medical. Im not sure where in the world you are so I can only comment on the situation in the UK. Many jobs would ask if you have any diseases or conditions which would affect your ability to work. For example, I am epileptic and I would have to tell any employer where I would be working with flashing lights. The only jobs that require full medical examinations are those that are physically demanding. (For example, as Michelle said; The AA)

I really hope that this works out for you. 10 years is a long time to go without job security and to get it back now must feel great!

In the US, if your employer wants you to get it done, you have to.
