A poem that is telling me something, what ?

I haven't posted for a long long time, but i'm in a strange kind of state of mind, kind of empty with an expectation of filling this space, and this poem caught my attention, it has something to say to me, as i keep reading it, so maybe some of you would like to pull it apart and give me a few idea's,

"From the book by Colin Thompson Laughing for Beginners"

`You are too shallow to drown in,` she said
I looked in my heart and my head.
The words that i wanted were missing,
so i led her by the hand to the bed.
`You are too shallow to drown in,` she said.
I sat there thinking deep thoughts.
I longed for her arms but said nothing.
She cried and went out for a walk,
In the darkness down by the river
She stood throwing dreams at the moon.
`He is too shallow to drown in,` she said
And then went back to the room.
And the love in our hearts unable to fly
Crept away unseen and unsaid.
And the tears in our thoughts unable to cry
Drowned the dreams we had in our heads
`You are too shallow to drown in,` she said.
I sat there unable to speak.
When at last i found the right words,
she'd been gone nearly a week

Hi to all the Old and New

I think for me it means that we try and think too much / over complicate things. When we try and think too hard about things (I sat there thinking deep thoughts), we find it dificult say what we mean (The words that i wanted were missing). By the time we realise how simple the situation really is, it is often too late.

Its a very moving poem and I shall continue to think about it. If I come up with anything else, I will let you know. I hope your emptiness fills up too.

"He's too shallow to drown in"

That, to me, suggests that the poet is self-centered. It doesn't mean that he's incapable of understanding greater meaning, only that his world is narrow. I've felt this way with depression and anxiety, for example. I could never empathize with others as much as I wanted to. Every time someone would tell me about their problems, I'd relate them to myself. "Yeah, I had that once". It's not entirely a bad thing to do that...in fact, it's essential for true understanding. But the protagonist seems to think he's too wrapped up in his own experience.

Shallow, in this case, doesn't mean materialistic or uncaring. It means that the person is dealing with problems and there's not enough room to let someone all the way into his heart. She cannot be consumed with him because he cannot be consumed by her. Imagine for a moment that the poet is an estuary...there's a lot of sediment there (emotional baggage), and the water's simply not deep enough for her to immerse herself.

That's what it says to me, anyway. If that's indeed what it means, it was a very eloquent way of saying it. I like the poem a lot...thanks for sharing.

SO great to talk to you will have to get the "TeensNight " info newspaper articles and all they have accomplished ..I have kept a journal ( ocd LOL) about every night we meet up so I will send that on as well ....

I got the wall feeling from this and I am good at having walls up not letting ppl in and not allowing them to love me or really get to know the real me
I have done this for so long it is a hard habit to break
Only few and very few get in behind the walls .......you have been one and I am glad you are back
