bizzare xanax question

i am on lexapro, but also take xanax when needed. i usually let it dissolve under my tongue, and then just swish some water around in my mouth to wash down what didnt dissolve and kill the taste that it leaves in my mouth. well last night i was feeling pretty panicky while just laying on the couch and trying to relax and sleep, so i stuck one under my tongue. well i fell asleep before it dissolved and woke up this morning with a burning under my tongue. like a bunch of little paper cuts or something were there. this has never happened before, so of course im freaked out thinking that i have some kind of mouth cancer or something. i keep trying to tell myself that its just because i didnt get to swish water around in my mouth after i took it and that it just stayed in the same place in my mouth all night, but i just keep thinking the worst. does anyone else dissolve xanax in their mouth instead of swallowing it? did anyone ever have this happen? did the chemicals in the xanax just irritate my mouth and im freaking out for nothing? please help!!

well I don't take xanax but i imagine its just becasue its been in the same spot all night.
The same thing happens to me when I have a sore throat and I'll have a cough drop nestled in my cheek , I wake up in the am and there is still some undissolved and my skin on the cheek hurts and feels very uneven and rough.

I take my ativan sublingually sometimes. I have woken up with that feeling before. Under your tongue is a very sensitive area, its just a little irritated. Nothing to worry about. Im not a doctor but its most likely not mouth cancer ;)

It is probably just the pill being there for so long.  I take Xanax as needed and have never heard of disolving it in your mouth.  It dissolves quickly in the stomach and I would think that is where it is supposed to dissolve.  Ask your doctor or pharmacist about it.

thanks for all of your replies. i am on .5 mgs of xanax as needed. i have heard about taking immediate relief medications by letting them dissolve under your tongue (i actually thought i read it in the forums of healingwell somewhere) as they would enter your body more quickly than waiting for them to move through your digestive system. am i wrong? i am open to being put in my place!

No you are not wrong. Taking medication sublingually(under the tongue) or buccally ( between cheek and gum) gets the med into your system up to 20 mins faster. Although in my experience the benzo i take which is similar ..doesnt take very long to start working for me. Really there is no harm in taking it by swallowing or letting it dissolve.

Hey leaves,
Sublingual and buccal medications are given for a variety of conditions. The most common sublingual medication is the nitroglycerin tablet. Its rapid action to relax the blood vessels reduces the workload on the heart and relieves the pain of angina pectoris.
Other buccal and sublingual medications, however, serve a variety of purposes-such as narcotic pain relief, migraine pain relief, blood pressure control, and mental decline due to dementia (i.e., ergoloid mesylates).
This form of medication is extremely effective, because it bypasses the digestive system and is absorbed into the bloodstream in minutes. Not all medications can be prepared for sublingual or buccal administration; some of the compounding difficulties are taste, solubility, and dosage limitations of the medicine.
There are many different routes to take drugs but most of the time if you are going to deviate from the directions on the prescription bottle it may be wise to discuss this with your physician.
Valium comes in rectal form too............suppository.....usually for uncooperative person or unable to access mouth.
