Tickle in throat

I was experiencing a tickle in my throat, feeling like an eye twitch about 2 months ago.  This sensation has returned.  It is not constant, maybe 5-7 times per day lasting 1-2 seconds.  My nephew passed away at age 19 within the last two weeks and I was at my sister's side for many days.  During that period is when the twitching started again.  Now, of course, I would like to chalk this up to anxiety, BUT when I was explaining the symptoms to my sister she said she recently lost a coworker to esophageal cancer which also complained of that symptom. Then when she detected my hypochondriac reaction to everything LOL she suggested in may be an allergy. Yikes! Do any of you experience this throat twitching?  Should I go in for some type of testing?  If so, what type of dr should I see?

Dear soul,

That's so sad that your nephew died so young. How tragic for your family. Lots of prayers headed your and your sister's way.

An ear-nose-throat doctor is your best bet for the throat tickle. Tell them what you're experiencing, and they'll be able to check you out for most of the things your sister mentioned. To check out your larynx and trachea to make sure your breathing passages are fine, they may do a laryngoscopy, in which they pass a camera at the end of a small, flexible tube up your nostril and then it turns to look directly down your throat. I've had this done twice, and it's a simple procedure. They will numb your nostril with some sort of agent, and then you won't feel the tube much at all. ENT docs are also the ones who usually attend to allergies.

I know little about esophageal cancer, except what I've learned through having acid reflux, but I believe there are many more symptoms to that than just the throat tickle. A gastroenterologist would be the person to consult about that.

I expect you'll be just fine, but as a health anxiety sufferer myself, I live by the better safe than sorry rule. And the doctors are the folks who would know best.

Dear soul,

I am so sorry about your nephew dying and your sister must be devestated.  I lost a son who was 21 years old and I know her pain first hand. My prayers are with her.

There are so many sx of anxiety and if you have had this before and it went away it may be your anxiety.  If you are looking for positive reassurance if  it is your anxiety, it would not hurt to make an appointment with your PCP.
