Which do you find more helpful, Ativan or Xanax?

Doesn't ativan take longer to work but last's longer or do I have it mixed up?

And sorry, to answer your original question. I prefer ativan as it does not give me rebound anxiety. That's just me though. Take care.

I will try to answer your question but please remember I am not a professional.

Xanax: Peak plasma concentration is achieved in 1-2 hours.  It is the drug with the faster onset of these 2 meds you are asking about.

However it has a half life of 6-12 hours.

Half-life: time taken for blood concentration to fall to half its peak value after a single dose. . This time may vary considerably between individuals.

Ativan: Peak plasma concentration  peaks at around 2 hours.

The half life for Ativan is 10-20 hours so it is the longer acting. ^{Reference: PDR}

I take Xanax my self. Isnt Ativan one you take regularly and Xanax one you take as soon as a panic attack feeling comes on (sorry.the question mark key on my key board is broken) I take 1 to 2 .5 milligrams of Xanax. I think if your anxiety or panic is something that is longer lasting after it hits ya then Ativan is better and more efficient for you. And Xanax is for the shorter lasting panic\anxiety attacks. It usually works after about 20 min for me.
I think someone with a daily type anxiety is one who does better with Ativan. I have soo enjoyed reading posts on this site of people with similar problems. People one can relate to ;)

I also take 15 mg of valium per day if needed

I found that the ativan was causing sme memory probs but then too it could be the fibro

I take 1mg Ativan at bedtime and a 1/2 of one in the morning. It works well for me....I cannot take Xanax...
