Zoloft

Hey everyone!

I haven't been on in a while, I have been so busy. Fortunately my anxiety was under control for a while without being on any medication however now it's coming back and the valium isn't working. My Dr. prescribed my Zoloft telling me it was weight "neutral" however I have seen many posts about people gaining a lot of weight on this medication. I am scared because I aleady gained about 20 lbs on the Lexapro and can't afford to gain anymore. Any insight would help! Thank you!

I am only sharing my experience with you.  I have been told Cymbalta does not cause weight gain........I gained 25 lbs on it.  I am now trying to switch to Wellbutrin, and it is not going well.  Wellbrutrin side effects are tremors, headache and anxiety............yup I have those 3 in huge amounts and I am more anxious than I have been in 3 years.  I am seeing my Pdoc this afternoon. 

I know she will do the "I Told You So"

I would like to have all the physicians that prescribe the SSRIs and SNRIs on these meds so they could understand we are not lying but growing out of all our clothes is depressing too.  

I also have read the posts re weight gain on Zoloft. Others do not gain weight.............don't understand it.

Dear lalala16.... I am on Celexa and have gained a ton of weight but I don't think it's because of the antidepressant.
I had a close friend on zoloft..... she was thin then, and she is thin now...
I think that all 'sideffects" are different for everyone. Two people can take the same medication that lists headaches as a side effect.... one will get them big time... and the other one won't. I think it may take a trial run to see how you feel with the new drug. Some people eat when they are depressed... some eat when they are happy... try to notice when you tend to eat 'for no reason'... anxiety will sometimes make people overeat... I know it does for me... my daughter on the other hand can't eat a bite when she is anxious. ... so she gets very thin. My oldest daughter is exactly like me... when she is worried or anxious she immediately reaches for something to eat... I think part of the solution is to know your own patterns.. are you a nervous, depressed eater... or vice versa....
Also... I think that exercise is important... when we are depressed ...boy...if you are anything like me.. you don't feel like moving at all... I walk around in circles not knowing what I want to do...then end up going back to bed...same when I am really anxious...both can be paralizying type of reactions..Luckily I am not in that place anymore but I was for a long time...
You mentioned that you are taking something for anxiety...but not for depression... except for the zoloft which you are about to begin... the anxiety might be what has made you gained weight if you are a nervous eater. Keep a food journal... see what your triggers are.
Once you begin the zoloft ...try to get out for a good walk everyday if you can..Make it a pact with a friend if you think that will help.. keep your food journal... it'll make it obvious if you have increased your food intake and when....
Knowledge is power.... the more you know the better prepared you are to deal with whatever comes your way.
Don't worry about the weight gain right now so much as concentrating on helping yourself out of this depression/anxiety. If you focus on a helping yourself become healthier , emotionally , physically etc..
I know this is a difficutl journey.... this is why I'm so happy you are with this wonderful HW family... we are here for you every step of the way... and I'm sure there are more wonderful advice, support from other posters that may be more helpful to you...
