Husband was laid off today........

When it rains it pours!

My husband came home today unexpectedly and told me he was laid off.

He gets 1 month severance pay and we have health insurance till March 31st.

Sometimes you think you have all you can take and then you are dished out more....

I am in shock, and scared.

And to be in the middle of a med change....good Lord. I felt I was barely treading water before.

Please keep us in your prayers.....

I know we are not alone in this, there are lots like us out there.

I just wonder where the strength is going to come from.

I am still at 5mg of Paxil and just upped Lexapro to 10mgs. last friday.

I sure hope the Lex kicks in, but I am going to do this paxil taper super slow. I can't afford to feel any worse right now.

Thanks guys....

we had been stressed about finances before this.....

found out we have a sexual offender living behind us now (we have 2 little girls) and now this news.

(did I mention I have the flu too?)

God never gives us more than we can handle, right?

I know you must feel so overwhelmed right now. I find it helps me when there is just SO MUCH to deal with to say, "God, thank you for taking these burdens off my shoulders. It's more than I can bear right now. Take these worries and heavy loads from me and work things out in the way that You know is best. I can't see the big picture here, but I know You can."

Take good care of your health, too, Dawnie. Sorry to hear you're sick on top of it all. Be kind to yourself, especially right now.

I tend to feel better if I can make myself more in control. Why don't you sit down and write down the things that are bothering you. Then in the next column write down what you hope to accomplish. Then write down short term and long term things you can do to get there. Now you have a game plan. Let me get you started.

Problems:

1.) Husband laid off
2.) Sex offender living near by
3.) New medicine
4.) Flu

Goals:

1.) Have enough money and health insurance
2.) Keep daughters safe
3.) Control anxiety and/or depression
4.) Feel better

Short term solution:

1.) Apply for unemployment. Get COBRA information. Start contacting people and letting them know your husband is job searching. Network, network, network.
2.) Look up his crime and see if it even involved young girls. Sex offenders usually have types. Is he into boys? Adults? See if he fits the profile to perpetrate against little girls. Realize that you are a great mom and supervise your daughters well so that they are safe.
3.) Research your new drug and realize it will be a little while till you feel its effects. Put your trust in your doctor that this is the way to go.
4.) Rest, take Zinc, vitamen C, eat chicken soup.

Long term solution:

1.) Hubby will interview and find a new great job
2.) You will teach your kids about "stranger danger" and they will keep themselves safe. We have to assume that everyone we don't know is a danger. You actually might be in a safer situation because since you know there is a danger you will be extra vigilant.
3.) See a therapist and work on those coping skills and ways to help yourself in addition to medicating.
4.) Get a flu shot!

Dawnie I am so sorry to hear your husband lost his job. I will definetly keep you in my prayers. I think Raniah suggested a wonderful prayer. And Fitzy gave some awesome advice too.

Hang in there sweetie, I am sure better days are ahead. I think God has something even better on hand for you and your family.

Hi Dawnie:  I am so sorry to hear of your bad news.  Unfortunately, bad things are happening to good people right now and they are coming all at once.  You had some excellent suggestions with the list.  Also, I don't know if you are in the US, but if you are you may have some additional options open to you.  I live in Connecticut and I recently found out that our governor set up an insurance fund for adults who do not have or cannot afford COBRA or individual health insurance.  Fees are sliding and are based on income.  Also, my state has a program set up for children so they can obtain health insurance either for free or at a reduced price.  Perhaps you could check your state's website and see if you have any options similar to this available to you.  With the price of health insurance so high this could be really helpful to you.

I'll keep you and your family in my prayers.  I know this is easier said than done, but take one day at a time and use your list to prioritize and attack one item at a time.  Please keep in touch and let us know how you're doing.

Oh and don't forget that your employer should pay some of your Cobra and be reimbursed by the govt under the stimulus package!

So sorry to hear the news about your husband's job loss. I know economic times are very difficult and immensely stressful right now. Just remember, you still have your husband and your kids that love and care for you and with their love and support, you can make it through the hard times. I know it must be overwhelming and scary at the moment, but keep your head up and when you need to talk, we are here to listen

I'm sorry to hear of the bad news, and will be saying some prayers for you and your family! Take care and try to keep your focus on the positives. . . Doing this helps me to figure out how to fix things sometimes, so I thought I would share another little trick :)

You guys are awesome! I was reading your posts to my husband last night. It's so wonderful that there is a group of such supportive lovely people on here.

We made lists last night and talked and talked about plans and priorities. We finally decided we needed to chill and put on Everybody loves Raymond before we finally fell asleep.

Thanks to you all......great tips and loving offers of support.

Just wanted to let you all know my husband actually had 2 job offers to choose from!

He is going back to a company he worked for 5 year ago, and they are welcoming him with open arms. He starts on April 13th.

It's not perfect (no benefits yet) but we are SO thankful...

You will be in my prayers too.

Your life event is the type that can raise my body temp if I just think about it. My psych instructs me not to think about it. It seems you are doing some of this: you kept your message short, and you seem to know the shape of this roller-coaster . I think you will make the right choices when it is time to make them. There are organizations out there to provide fiscal emergency help, if necessary, such as social services and private foundations etc. Don't go without food, shelter, and a safe place to rest for you and your family. Pace yourself, its when people overdo/try to do too much, in a tough situation, that new dangers can be increased. Remember : You are tough, more dangerous than danger.
