Got put on Zoloft today and I'm 18.

My doctor put me on Zoloft today and said it has few side effects and is very safe. He did inform me that alot of people have increased depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts with this medication sometimes. I'm extrememly nervous about taking it and only being 18. Any suggestions or opinions or just plain advice? I'm starting off at half a pill(25mg) and he said if it doesn't make me feel better in a week to up it to one whole pill(50mg) and then wait a few weeks and see how I'm feeling. He also said to keep him updated on how effective it is. He also said if I have more anxiety or depression or have suicidal thoughts to stop the medicine immediately and to make a doctors appointment. I don't want to have suicidal thoughts and I most certainly do not want to kill myself, but I completely understand how people want it and have those thoughts. I've had times whenever I thought I just want this to stop so badly and understand while in that situation that people would want to die and or kill themselves. I'm just not quite sure and very uneasy. If I have suicidal thoughts I'm afraid it's going to be something that sticks with me forever.

Paige,

Your doctor was just being responsible and giving you the warnings that this "could possibly" happen, but in most cases folks do very well on these meds.

My daughter took this medication and wondered why she waited so long before asking for help. Go ahead and try this medication, never know it could be the answer you are looking for.

I would advise being extra aware of any depressive thoughts while taking the Zoloft. If you determine that such depressive thoughts are unusually frequent or intense, stopping the medication would be smart. I should add, though, that you seem very rational and that it's unlikely that your mind could shift so suddenly to embracing suicide that you would not be able to counteract it.

Also I misinformed you guys I'm actually taking the 100mg pills so I'm on 50mg now :)

Hey everyone, I chickened out on taking my Zoloft last night. I was afraid to take it before bed because I wanted to be aware of the effects it has on me so I was going to take it this morning. Now I am talking myself out of taking it during they day because I WILL know the effects if I react badly to it! Darn my brain! I'm am a fearful wreck! :(

I hate it.

Maybe if I have a friend stay the night to sort of "watch me" tonight I'll have the guts to take it.

Don't be fearful, Paige. My guess is that your doctor knows what he's doing. It could be the most helpful medication you've ever tried.

I was on zoloft for a long time it worked reallywell for me. Least amount of side effects. I was also on paxil that is what helped me over the anxiety and get me out of the house as i was agoraphobic. have not taken any meds for 10 years not having some anxiety over all this h1n1 stuff so i am having some anxiety again (not as bad as i was years ago) so i am starting paxil again. The only side effect for me is feeling tired at first but after about 2 weeks that goes away for me. Just the first 2 weeks i dont like but it is worth it in the end. good luck. Barb

Dear Paige,

Stop the spinning thoughts and just take the med knowing you will feel some side effects but these should pass. The medication may take 4-6 weeks for the full therapuetic effect to take place but you should start to feel better before that hopefully.

Also I still think therapy is a great way for you to go to learn how to overcome your anxiety issues.

I see a therapist and it helps me.
