When people say Effexor made them manic - what does this mean?

i just wondered exactly what manic means?  hyper? 

anyone take effexor and have this happen?  if so, can you explain? 

i am trying to decide between effexor and prozac (it's free) and wondered if anyone had any comments about either.  i know everyone reacts differently but it still helps.  :)

I don't usually post in this thread, but wanted to chime in. I saw your post when I opened my screen. Anyhow, I was on Prozac for a few months because of extreme anxiety from Lyme Disease. I helped me out SOOO MUCH. I absolutely felt so much better on it. Unfortunately, it gave me terrible acid reflux, so I had to stop taking it. I personally would try the Prozac before the effexor because Prozac, you can stop taking at anytime without severe withdrawal symptoms. This is not true with effexor. I haven't taken effexor, but my doctor had mentioned to me that on effexor, you must take your dose at the exact scheduled time otherwise, you start having brain zaps, etc.....doesn't sound good. I'd rather start on something a little easier on my system....

Hazel, by manic, it means:

  Manic: affected with, relating to, characterized by, or resulting from mania

 

Mania: excitement manifested by mental and physical hyperactivity, disorganization of behavior, and elevation of mood; specifically : the manic phase of bipolar disorder.

 

Or it could be the total opposite, like manic depression.

They have to list every imaginable side effect of these meds for legal reasons. No one that i've known, that has taken this kind of med, has had ALL of the listed side effects. Effexor is an SSRI, which most of the time, will make you a bit more anxious in the begininng until your body adjusts to it. Talk to your doctor and see what they think would be the best option for you.

Hi Hazel.

I have been on both medications the Prozac did not rally work for me. Effexor is an snri and is usually prescribed to people who have not had success with ssri's. Effexor is a strong antidepressant and it did work well for mr but I stopped due to weight gain.
