Hi VS,
As Em mentioned, CBT is very effective in treating health related anxiety. It differs from talk therapy in that it actively works in changing the way an anxiety sufferer thinks and reacts to fearful thoughts and stimuli. Both methods have benefits, but I believe that CBT is especially helpful in treating what you have described is bothering you.
I used to worry constantly about my health. I was somewhat compulsive about taking my BP/pulse, reacting to every little twinge/'off' feeling, ect. I found relief through CBT. It is not always the quickest fix...in fact I went through two courses, but it was worth it!
You can choose to be on medication in conjunction with therapy, or not. This is entirely up to you and your dr. If you find that your CBT specialist is not on board with what you want to do in this regard, find another one.:)
There are also some good on-line CBT sites (in our resources) and self-help books. (library or Amazon) These are not as optimal as going to see someone IMO, but could get you a head start, or be an alternative if needed.
I wish you the best in finding the help that you need. We will be here for you along the way. Let us know how you are doing soon.
S.C.
