Hello,

I started taking fluoxetine when I was 14 years old I have been on it since June of 2012 (I'm 23 years old now). I stopped taking it because I was feeling really well and in October I relapsed and got into a depression. I went back to my doctor and he once again put me on the fluoxetine, I was on it for about 3 weeks during those 3 weeks I had felt good for about 3 days and then relapsed into a deeper depression and that's when my OCD/irrational thoughts really kicked in. I was wondering if anyone knew whether the fluoxetine stopped working or if that is normal when you have flushed the medication totally out of your system. I had always gone on and off the fluoxetine just never for that long of a time and it had always kicked back into my system. I recently just got taken off the Prozac cold turkey and have now been on citolapram for about 9 days now my mornings are the worst and have not really felt that much better. Is it normal for the Prozac to have reacted the way it did and will the citalopram eventually make me feel better? Also, I hear citalopram makes depressive symptoms worse for the first two weeks, is that normal?

Hello and welcome:)

It sounds like you have a few changes going on here, and that your Rx regime is in flux at the moment. I assume that you have discussed this all with your doctor, and are just looking for others with personal experiences to relate to? We aren't medical professionals...but can hopefully shed a little light on what to expect with your new meds.

I do not take medication, and my knowlege is limited, but I know that it's not uncommon for a long time med to suddenly stop being effective for you. I was actually suprised to read that it had worked for as long as it did for you...so it may be that your needs/chemistry have changed, and now you need to find an alternative.

Hopefully the citolapram will work out well. Yes, it can be a rough go of it before it actually starts to be effective, so try to be patient and hang in there.

Abruptly stopping any med that should be weaned off of is going to produce some unwanted withdrawl/side effects. I am suprised that you were not put on a taper schedule for that. I hope that you start to adapt to this change soon!

Again, your doctor or pharmacist is always a safe bet for questions of this nature...but hopefully someone with experience with these medications will be on soon to help you as well.

Thanks for the reply I greatly appreciate it :) yes I too was also surprised that I was not weened off the medication I had talked to some pharmacists and surprisingly they said that was ok since I was on 20 mg of fluoxetine and not on a higher dose, however, I will discuss this with my new doctor. I have hope that the citalopram will work in time but if not I plan for that too as well. Again, thank you for the reply.
