Welcome to the forums! You don't sound crazy at all. You are suffering from an anxiety disorder, like most of us here. I have a similar flight response to panic--when it happens, I need to be moving--so I understand your experience. I'm sorry for all that you've gone (and are going) through. It is so difficult to lose a loved one, especially when it causes increased anxiety.
I think it is wonderful that therapy has been so good for you and that you have put a lot of work into it. It sounds like you have made really great strides, though the highway thing must be so frustrating. Have you talked to your therapist about
strategies re: driving on the highway? I am guessing you've hit a wall with this if you're considering medication, but I wanted to be sure.
Deciding whether to use medication or not is a personal decision. I would recommend thoroughly researching your options before deciding to take medication. If this is your decision, I would get a referral for a psychiatrist from your primary care doctor. I have had both good and bad experiences with psychiatrists and I know from my experiences that you really need someone who listens to you and respects you. You also (obviously) need someone who is a good psychiatrist, which is why a referral could help.
My personal experiences with medication have also been both good and bad. However, what you need to know is that everyone reacts differently to medications. Some people on the internet have horror stories about
medications but these are generally extreme cases for people to even bother posting it on the net. In other words, educate yourself about
medications but be careful about
keeping in perspective what you learn on the internet and who the source is.
Hang in there!
Hugs,
Av
