Cole - I took atenolol for about 9 months. I had no adverse side effects at all. It has been around for a long time and is known to be a safe medication, when taken as instructed. Indeed, you might conclude that it is more dangerous for you NOT to take Atenolol, when it has been prescribed, than to take it. Based on my personal experience and the reading I have done, I would not worry about the Atenolol at all.
Xanax can be more dangerous -- but mostly if abused or if you become dependent on it. I have taken xanax on rare occassion, and found it can be very effective, but personally I would (1) not consider xanax to be a long term solution, (2) take the least dose that is effective and only take it when you really need it, and (3) NEVER drink alchohol when on xanax.
