Doxycycline and serotonin syndrome

Hi, hoping someone can help.  A couple of years ago I was hospitalised with serotonin syndrome, and have noticed since that some drugs seems to have an odd effect on me. Often these drugs are on the list of medications that can cause serotonin syndrome, even though I am no longer on the drug that caused the overdose (paroxetine).

I am presently on doxycyline for a severe sinus infection, and have started feeling very 'cloudy', if that's a good enough description?  I have the shakes, feel confused, and so down in the dumps that it's not funny.  My get up and go has really disappeared.  Driving makes me sick.

This all feels similar to when I started to have the serotonin symptons.  Surely it's totally out of my system by now?  How can a drug make me feel like this so quickly?  Or is it just the sinusitis getting worse?  Have no idea if I should come off the drug or not.  Any advice?

Hi Debs,

I am sorry to hear of your past and now present trouble with S.S. and your current situation.

I think that this is really a question for your prescribing doctor, and perhaps your pharmacist could be of help as well.

It can be really hard to distinguish between side effects, illness and anxiety symptoms...even for medical professionals! However, you MD should be able to advise you in this, since we safely cannot.

Please feel free to post with us anytime.  Although we can't give medical-type of advice, we are certainly always  here to support, encourage and understand in regards to anxiety struggles.:)

Hi Debs,

My psychiatrist prescribed me paroxetine and I stopped after two doses due to side effects and the docs at ER suspected an overdose too. Since then I get anxiety reaction with common drugs and developed a phobia against all meds. Don't know if it's psychological or real physical reaction though.
