Hi everyone.

We have had a fly problem here and are just now beginning to get it under control (I hope!) but about 4 days ago I was cleaning and a small fly (a little larger than a gnat but it wasn't a gnat) flew straight down my windpipe and into my lungs. I immediately began gagging and coughing for a good 10 minutes but it never came up. Then, as if that wasn't bad enough, another one flew down into my lungs and caused me to start coughing again. It was at that point that I quickly got out of there and spent all the next day trying to eradicate these little flies and trying to stop the breeding cycle using bleach, foggers, etc, but I still have these little flies in my lungs now.

Anyway, for a few days my chest ached and felt "full" and I could definately feel something inside my lungs (which I knew were the two flies). I also felt like something was "catching" whenever I'd try to take a deep breath and I could feel this strange "fluttering" sensation in my lungs from time to time. I also spent a whole day coughing but could not get them out. I already suffer from GAD, OCD, Hypochondria, etc and all I could think of was maggots eating away at my lungs or getting some raging infection.

So it's been about 4 days now and I can still feel something in my lungs but not quite as bad as it was in the beginning. I've also had a lot of anxiety to the point where it is driving me crazy and my thoat feels very lumpy and nervous. I've also been feeling a little queasy (but I also have GERD, gastritis and IBS) but I'm thinking that maybe some bacteria from the flies got into my stomach. Last night I was laying in bed and heard a high-pitched noise in my head and ended up having a panic attack. The night before that I was feeling really strange and broke out in a cold, clammy sweat. It hasn't been fun at all )-:

I called a family member and told them what happened and they told me that they had done the same thing several times and nothing ever came of it so now I don't know if it's the flies I inhaled or just anxiety. Has anyone else ever gone through an expereince like this with accidentally inhaling flies?.

Hey, there.

I have never had an experience like this, but I have been a hypochondriac before and I know that your body can make you feel things that you aren't necessarily experiencing.

A good example of this was that I had a huge fear of taking birth control. HUGE. I used to be on it, had my first panic attack and developed anxiety, and then it was just like I couldn't take my birth control. What was worse was that I found out that it can greatly increase your chances of a blood clot that could, of course, be fatal. I freaked out. On a whim one day, I decided I was going to take it and spent the next week and a half convinced I had a blood clot because I would get sharp pains in my legs. As soon as I finally quit worrying about it, it went away.

Another example: I had a fear of an brain aneurysm. After that developed, I got head pressure and headaches all the time until I got over the fear.

Yet another example: I was scared of heart disease and I had constant heart pressure and pain until I got over the fear.

I could go on and on, but the point is that it is very likely just your anxiety. It likes to make us believe all of these crazy things and can even make them SUPER realistic. the key is this: to stop worrying about it. Spend the day doing something fun and if you get your mind off of it enough, chances are it will float away.

However, if you really do not think any of this will help or you (and not you anxiety) thinks that there could be a health problem, just go to the doctor and get checked out. If there's something wrong, it'll be an easy fix. I promise (: And if there is absolutely nothing wrong, they'll send you home and you can rest easy knowing that you've gotten in checked out.

Agreed;) Probably anxiety related...but call your doctor just for peace of mind.:)

Sethp most of the time when choked on some kind of insect or foreign object once it gets past the choke
reflex we swallow it, it seems like we can still feel it but that's because out larynx is very sensitive, and
all the choking and throat clearing irritates it.
When I would ride with my Granddad who used horses for farm work we use to get fly's up our nose in our
eyes and in out mouths, never heard of it hurting anyone. If it continues to bother you just take SC's advice.

I just wanted to thank all of you for the very helpful and supportive replies. It did make me feel somewhat better and I was actually surprised by just how common it is for people to have this happen to them. A lot of bicyclists and outdoors types seem to have this happen frequently. I can still feel something in my lungs (especially when I take a deep breath) and am hoping it will go away in time.

I definately agree that anxiety can cause all kinds of very scary and very real-seeming symptoms. It is the one thing in my life that has robbed me of pleasure and at times, made my life absolutely miserable. Distractions such as art, reading, gardening, etc seem to help some.
