I don't want to feel pressure to wear a dress

Hi there Greek Goddess, I hope you don't mind if I jump forums to tell you what I think. Can you speak with the principal, or dean, or other person in the administration (I'm sorry but I don't know what kind of school it is.) and ask their opinion? Find out what the other people on the stage will be wearing. This might help you decide what to wear. I suppose the students will be wearing graduation gowns and the men on stage will be wearing suits (not tuxes). Although in the past women would wear dresses, they wouldn't have worn a formal-type prom dress, would they? I was an administrator at a university and most women involved with the ceremony wore suits (jacket, top and a skirt) but nowadays a pant suit can be very 'formal'. If you do wear a dress or a skirt, wear low heels - they're more comfortable and you won't feel overly tall. If you get some opinions before you make your decision on what to wear, you won't feel as nervous or anxious. You'll feel more confident. This is exactly what I would do. I wish I could help more.

GG, I can only imagine! WOW, I am not very tall and I have always had an affinity for tall women, the kind
that can look down at me when we dance with that expression, "What a cute little puppy, I think I'll take him
home"! lol, I know your not looking for a comedian, so from what you write and the way you describe yourself
and others I have made a male decision. I think you will be elegant no mater what you choose, your in a
power position so a sharp pants suit with a 2 inch heal will hold you in esteem, in a formal, Your just
another beautiful woman! Main thing is have fun and be all those kids need. Peace!

Are you still planning to wear pants?

If they're of proper length, your shoes are barely going to show. Your shoes do need to be nice, of course. I would look for very dressy flats. When you shop for your outfit, ask someone at the stores where you're shopping. Maybe check out some boutiques for ideas. In fact, I've seen some beautiful ensembles that included ball gowns and ballet flat style shoes. :) There are gorgeous, very formally styled shoes available without a heel. Those shoes are available for a reason.

Not to disagree with your friend, but I am unaware of any etiquette requiring heels. There are plenty of etiquette rules against wearing heels - for example, a heel of more than 1 1/2" is considered inappropriate in most professional situations.

Etiquette is much looser than it used to be, anyway. People break fashion etiquette on a regular basis - even fashionistas do.

The key to being graceful is to wear something that makes you feel at ease and empowered. When you get dressed, you should feel like the Goddess that you are. ;)

Like someone else said, you weren't selected for this honor for your clothes. You were selected because of who you are. No one is going to be looking that closely at your shoes - they're going to be listening to what you're saying.

I'm so sorry that this is causing you so much stress! I love, love, love getting dressed up. I went to 8 proms in 3 years of high school. haha I wish I could come help you pick out your outfit! :)

I understand, Goddess!

Different things stress out different people. My husband was asked to be a groomsman a few years back and was like, "Why is ____ DOING this to me?!?!?" I, on the other hand, was already dreaming of chiffon and pearls while I tried to calm him down. haha

I understand the small place thing, too. There are 135 registered voters in my town, haha.

You'll look fine, just make sure you put on your best smile!

btw - as far as etiquette goes and the "should" wears and such, I'm in the very, very traditional deep south, where Debutante balls are still very common place, and I've never heard anyone comment on someone wearing flats. Of course, ladies don't comment on such, anyway. It'll be okay. If anyone is hung up on your shoes, they're seriously focused on the wrong stuff.

A thought to remember - once you cannot change something, "it's not time to worry about that now." Once you're dressed and have stepped out the door, it's too late to change what you're wearing, so "it's not time to worry about that now." Try not to assess other people's choices and compare them to your own at the graduation. (I know, easier said than done.)

If this is something you worry about often, here's another idea for future - sometime in the future, invest in a really dynamite piece of jewelry. Something beautiful (not necessarily expensive). Wear it when you know you're going to have fun. Look at it and think about how beautiful it is. Think how beautiful it looks on you. It can be kind of a "confidence accessory" that you can wear later when you need to feel beautiful. I have a "confidence scarf" that I wear to stressful meetings. :)
