There are times when I feel uncomfortably anxious in the morning. I wake up earlier than I want to, and cannot fall back asleep. I have a hard time articulating what the feeling is. (My wife asked me, and I could not explain it well). I guess the closest I can come is to say it feels like I am "on edge" or nervous, but at the same time very tired. Being on-edge or nervous tends to make one hyper-alert
. Being hyper-alert
and also tired is a pretty uncomfortable condition. I have read about
some chemical (I forget the name right now) that is more prevalent in the body in the early morning and can cause this. So maybe that is what it is.
I know coffee is sometimes bad for anxiety. But for me, when I have this feeling, a couple of cups of coffee actually makes me feel better. Strange. I guess each of us reacts differently. (And in any event, I am a coffee addict).
