Could i have an anxiety disorder?

Ok so.. since last august (2012).. every day at school.. i seem to get really dizzy.. feeling like im going to pass out.. rapid heart beat.. and shakyness.  I also get confused.. like im in a dream.   it's weird.  at my school.. we have very bright flourescent lights all over the room.   I also get migraines.  I go to the nurse everyday complaining of dizziness and feeling like what i said of the symptoms above. I also have ulcerative colitis.  I think i should be homeschooled.  This just isnt possible to be going to school everyday feeling like this.

What should i do?   I need suggestions!

Hi KP and welcome.

I am sorry that you are feeling this way.:( That does sound very difficult to deal with.

I assume that you have regular check-ups with your doctor, as to rule out any physical reason(s) for the way you are feeling?

If so, then you can probably safely assume that this is anxiety...and start to focus on treating it that way.

Many people with chronic illnesses do also struggle with anxiety issues, so know that you are not alone. We have several members who cross over between this and the other health forums here.

I also find it interesting that you made mention of the flourescent lighting in your classroom. How did you make that connection? I have read and experienced myself that this type of lighting can make anxiety worse.

Have you talked with your parents, doctor, school nurse/counselor or other trusted adult with your experiences and feelings?

If not, I would urge you to do so right away. There is treatment and help to feel better.:)  Therapy, as well as medication are two options that many people find help them with their anxiety issues.

I would also invite you to check out our Resources here on the main page (1st post) In it you will find all sorts of great self-help ideas for getting started on stress management. The breathing, progressive muscle relaxation and meditation are a good place to start.

hi^ um.. i have talked to people but all they tell me is " push through" and suffer. it sucks. i try to breathe but it dosent help, i also try to not stress about school,. i just dont know what to do anymore!

I am sorry to read of your problems and wish I could advise you wisely.  However, I cannot tell you what your problem is nor can I recommend whether or not being home-schooled is a good idea for you.

I would suggest your parents contact the school nurse and discuss the nurse's assessments when you have gone to the health office at school.

I went through what you did with seeing the nurse most everyday, feeling like I was seconds away from passing out or throwing up. I couldn't sit still, focus, or deal with anything in a classroom due to my anxiety. It got so bad I wasn't able to even show up to class half the time or make it through the day. I finally just bit the bullet and switched to part time online schooling. It was a miracle for me. I did 4 online classes and 2 at the high school. The two I did at the high school were less stressful classes and ones I knew I could socialize in more. I made sure I had two teachers I was comfortable with and I never had to go home 'sick', see the nurse, or miss another day of school from my anxiety. By going to high school part time still, I still had friends, socialization, and a reason to leave the house. It was great!

I made a huge mistake this year by switching to full online schooling after I moved cities... It's made my anxiety tenfold now and I seriously regret it. I have no friends and no reason to leave my house. It's incredibly boring and because I made the choice to due full online instead of sticking it out in my new school, I don't think I'll be able to ever go back to real school.

I do not suggest going full time online from anxiety issues as it just makes things in your life worse. However, I do suggest part time as it really helped me a lot.

Just wanted to offer my support and encouragement. I hope you're able to get some answers about what is going on with your health and that it relieves some of your anxiety. Hang in there! :-)

Hi, I'm also new and these are some of the same symptoms I have. Especially a lot of lightheadness and dizziness. Why do lights even natural lighting make symptoms worse?

Kate, I am one of those PAD people who cant stant strobe lights, fluorescent lights bother me also, they flicker they are not on but pulse, You need some reassurance from the medical profession, have a sit down with your parents, it could be as simple as a need for special glasses, Peace.
