S.C. and Larry are right. If my post sounded like I was suggesting you take a medication you're not comfortable with, I apologize for that.
I was merely commenting on the aspect of your post concerned with changing who you are. The correct medication, when found for you, will level off the anxiety to a manageable level where you can control it.
If you need the medication, and it helps you to feel comfortable, any changes you see may well be you feeling better.
But yes, as S.C. mentioned, if you are feeling afraid to take it, discuss your fears with your doctor and therapist. Some options are starting an extremely low dose (I've done this before, for the same reasons as you)....or maintain the coping skills that are working for you now.
But yes, the choice should be yours.
