Hi please be kind, I'm from uc forum, starting lexapro

I've had a chronic disease of the bowel that's had ruined a marriage and suck the life out of my life :( I haven't done much in 10 yrs of the fear of my disease which is urgency for the bathroom, bloody diarrheah you can not control.

So 10 years in this disease ulcerative colitis , my new gut doctor suggested a anti anxiety drug to help get my mind off my disease and help heal my gut. it's my first time ever trying an anti anxiety, generic lexapro.

I read good things about it here. I never ever ever , did I say ever, think I would be on this type of medication because I thought I could control my anxiety but it's been a rough road.

I will be writing in as I start my meds tonight, 10mg

My doc didn't say the dose to start up so I guess I just start taking the 10mg .thanks for listening.

Welcome. We're a gentle crowd, so you'll fit right in.

I can imagine feeling anxious when you experience those symptoms, and to try and just cope, and hope, can be very rough. It's courageous to take the steps that you are.

I'm also on two types of antibiotics, flagyl and cipro that should ok right??

Were you prescribed these meds by two different docs? Or by the same doc?

Your physician is truly the only one who can answer medical questions like this,....have you asked your doc? Another resource is to ask your pharmacist. Since they handle all of your meds, they would be able to assist in seeing if there are any contraindications.

It's worth a quick phone call to your doc if you have any concerns. Hang tight! :)

I am sorry that you have had so much to deal with in terms of health...physical and with regards to anxiety.

Know that it is common to have anxiety issues along with chronic illness...and we have several cross over members from UC and other forums.

I wish you the best on your start up....and yes, check with your prescribing doctor(s) about your multiple Rx questions, as Merrida advised.

Good Morning,

This is Kitt and I am glad you have joined us.  Many of our members have chronic medical disorders as well as anxiety.  I am so sorry to read you have been suffering for 10 years with anxiety and just now starting on medication to help you.

I have a hubby with a 37 year history of Crohn's Disease so I have lived with someone much in the same boat as you are.

Lexapro is a good drug for many and I will keep my fingers crossed that this will be a huge help for you. The recommended dose of Lexapro is 10 mg once daily. If the dose is increased to 20 mg, this should occur after a minimum of one week.

Most of the medications in this category take 4-8 weeks for the full therapeutic effect to kick in, however, you should notice some relief of your sx after a couple of weeks.

I am not a Dr. so the info here is just from my own background in using this medication in the past.

Welcome to the group - you'll find kind support here for your anxiety and if you need to vent about physical symptoms. My closest co-worker had UC for 17 years (she had the J Pouch surgeries a couple years ago). I have ridiculous IBS, which I know in no way compares to UC, but to some extent, I do understand the fear of uncontrollable diarrhea. She and I bonded over planning our days around when it was safe to eat, planning trips to meetings where there were plenty bathrooms along the way (you can't take the highway when your life revolves around pooping, haha), etc.

I will say that I experienced some relief of some of the cramps/uncontrollable episodes as my anxiety improved with treatment - maybe it will be the same for you? I know it won't "fix" a chronic disease, no disrespect intended, but maybe it will help.

At the least, maybe it will help relieve some of the anxiety about your physical symptoms. I know UC hurts, but with most diseases, I think the emotions are as torturous as the pain/symptoms.

Thanks everyone. I took my first pill last night, scared but I did it and I survived :) yeah me!! I just got out of hospital because of my uc and at home resting . It's been a long 10 years.

I know anti anxiety meds will help, I'm ready and that is half the battle. I'm a very positive person:)
