I have taken GABA in the past, but don't recall it doing much for me. However, for some it does help. My two fave supplements for anxiety are TAURINE which is an amino acid and Kava Kava. Taurine has really helped me and is safe. Read this here:

And Kava Kava can work well, although it has gotten some negative press in the past due to some flawed research. Taken responsibly, it can be a safe alternative as well.
You may also want to start taking a good form of magnesium everyday and your B vitamins. Lacking in these can cause anxiety. Fish oil is also known to be a good mood stabilizer.
There are many different things that can be helpful to you, but according to how bad your anxiety is, it is unknown to what extent they will help. For myself, I do not think I would've made it this long without my prescription meds. But to each his own.
