Hi, I'm in the same boat as you, I don't think really close friends can be cultivated as easily as adults as they did when we were children. I had an incident at work recently where people I thought were friends turned against me. I'm still reeling from it. But I started to think about it, most of the people that are feigning indignation about the incident were never close to begin with. We had a working relationship, we talked, joked, but there was nothing really there. No one came to me and asked me my side of the story.
Keep your belief in God, you seem to be founded well there already. Be loyal to God and yourself, be willing to accommodate others, but don't let them abuse that willingness. If you're always there when others need help and they're never available when you need help, they aren't really friends to begin with.
